24/7 for multiple years in the military doesn't count. I mean that with no disrespect. I'm just talking about civilian jobs where you go into work away from home.

So, when I worked on remote events for Lockheed, often we'd be on underways with the Navy where we went way out to sea to get away from prying eyes and population centers to run weapons tests. While we were on the ships, we were considered working by Lockheed. So we got paid for every hour except 8 per day because they said "Well, you need 8 hours sleep and if you're sleeping you're not being productive so we're not paying you." But we were still "on the clock".

My longest stint like that was 18 days in one shot.

    That sucked.

No contact with family or the outside world 'cause SHHHH! SECRETS! and you're bobbing around in a tin can waiting for certain conditions to be able to shoot just one missile at one drone or target vehicle, maybe 2. But hey, I wasn't anywhere near the longest. One guy in our group did 88 days on underway. He crossed the equator twice on that trip. But he was ex-Navy anyway so it was no big deal for him.

Also, none of that is technically "legal" by labor law standards but the term/designation "critical to national security" gets the gubment around quite a few rules. More than you would think.

    Over a decade?

The longest straight I ever worked was 60 hours (2.5 days straight) day and night to finish a renovations job I was doing the work on. I had a deadline... Lots of energy bars and water!

But yeah, I don't technically ever stop working lol

  • Does working 2 jobs count? If so then I have a ridiculous amount of 7 day work weeks. Thankfully those days are behind me never to return.

I haven't had a day off in almost a month & every week is 50-60+ hours because apparently everyone wants to sit at home & get free money like a bunch of pu.. kitty cats.

111 days straight - December 9th 2019 to March 28th 2020. I liquidated 18 stores in CA from San Ysidro to Roseville (and one in Reno) during this time. On the plus side, I got to meet a few audio site friends on the trip, including @nooshinjohn

24/7 365 for the past 10 years. Bring a parent, I'm never off the clock. When I was younger I worked 2 jobs, first one 7-3 the second one 4-9. Did that for almost a year only had Sunday off as the second job I also worked Saturday mornings from 8-12.

My first three years in computer business solo starting in 1987 I worked 80-100/week. Probably less than five days a year then not working at all. Then it dropped to 60-80 hours a week for several years. Then 40-60 hours a week for several years. Now 25-40 for the last 15-20 years except for an extra 5-15 hours a week this year overseeing/keeping my late best friend's several businesses going for his widow and son.

  • I think we need a better interpretation of "work". Does "work" mean putting in your hours or is there actually tiring physical activity involved? My "work" involved exhausting physical labor on the back of a hot paving machine where I might be able to sit down once during a double or triple shift. I've seen many co-workers fall asleep standing up over the years including myself. The hour or so drive home at the end of the shift or shifts was horrible trying to stay awake and yes there's been accidents with workers falling asleep at the wheel. Supervising work or sitting in front of a puter screen with air conditioning to me is just a highly coveted paid vacation.

Sitting infront of a computer screen isn't a paid vacation, it's just that you trade off monsters in a given profession. If it wasn't for those computer screen people, coping with headaches, nerve damage in their wrists, sore eyes, brain fog, breathing in stale recirculated air all day, drinking the same crap coffee out of vending machines day in and day out.....you may not get your paycheck.

Having worked in construction and also paving, the smell, heat, feet on fire, eyes....I'm well aware of the downsides, but don't knock other professions until you walk in their shoes . My wife is one of those computer screen people and it's no vacation. Takes a mental toll, where jobs like we had was a more physical toll. Either way, work beats you up over the course of years you put into it no matter what you do.

They used to say.....do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life. Heck, If I was able to do that I'd be a rich p o rn star living on the Amalfi coast. Not many have that luxury of doing what they love, we do what is needed though....and thats life.

Agreed; Having been on both sides to I'll pass on breathing processed air all day, wrist cramps, and the problems with the water cooler and the coffee machine.
Earlier this week I got hit by a skid steer backing up (my fault; should've been paying attention). I got launched into a complete airborne somersault over a retaining wall and also hit hard enough to make me lose a work shoe. The next day I'm pushing wheelbarrows full of blacktop up a hill at the end of a 11 hour workday. Yessir; there are days I really miss the leaky watercooler issues.

Thank you sir. Yes I was very lucky as it could've just as easily been a trip to the hospital or worse yet the morgue. I still have a few black and blues and scrapes but as of today I'm not limping anymore.

Very strange... I had insane amounts of health issues, working an easy retail job in a much younger body than I ever did working construction in an older body.
The mental stress of dealing with the general public is... Taxing

Sitting at a computer all day, day in and out is also insanely tiresome

Good thing it was easier! 🙄🙄🙄🙄

For my regular 9-5, when covid hit, i worked 3 weeks strait sometimes 13 hour days getting 3000 people to work at home who have never worked at home. We were also shocked on how many people didn't even have home internet. It was a lot of work but we did it all just as the mandatory building shutdown hit for non essential workers.

    So the military doesn’t count?

Well, schiitballs. I guess all those deployments and months of 12 hour days, 7 days a week don’t count…..

Well, in the restaurant biz, my first year, the only day I didn’t go to work was Christmas day. Beyond that, I take a day off every other week and I work open-close 4 days a week (tues/weds and fri/sat)….but I do take 10 days each fall to visit my parents

At the Sony CRT plant, it ran 24/7.In the 17 years I was there I did a 4 month run without a day off. It was a true mother trucker. 12+ hours a day for that long. First weekend I was off was just sleep.
When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

I plowed snow for just over 30 hours straight when I was younger, don't think I could do it now. After being up that long it can be hard to go to sleep for some reason.
