I got me a New Toy!

Definitive Technology BP6B

I was going to go with Russ' DR-7 but I wanted some Bipolar towers, so - sorry Russ, wont be taking the DR-7.

Anyways, I compared them to some Boston's (twice the price) - I much prefered the smaller and less expensive Def Techs. So I thought I would give them a try.

I heard some LSi - on a receiver, they were nice. Not quite what I expected, but the placement and ampage was WEAK.

    No sir --

If I feel I have to they are GOING BACK.

That is why I am getting rid of my Polks...if they cant perform on their own without help then I'm not keeping them.

However, these speakers WILL need stands as they are short lil buggers!

I heard them in the store, stomping the crap out of some 1,000 dollar Boston Acoustics! LOL...funny stuff

They have dual 5.5" midbass (front and rear firing), and dual 1 inch tweets (front and rear firing).

Binding post are under the speaker.

Grill comes off witht he removal of the top cap...

Man I think they have an elegant look, with a tad bit of sex appeal...

With the grills off -- eh lets just say they are made for the grills to be ON.

However, this is a very thick cabinet, 1 inch thick. Half the size of the RTi70 and weighs the same!

This one has no subwoofer built in, very balanced sound.

The towers -- all depends on how you set it up, they are powered -- so they have a volume knob. Bass heavy depends on who sets them up.

Very troublesome though to take down the grills..

Congrats Sid. Def Techs are well regarded speakers. Spend some time with them before you get all googly eyed and post a review.

I've heard the BP10s before but the store didn't have the best amplification / placement on them either. Similar to your experience you mention with the LSi.

    LOL...

I doubt anyone takes my opinion to heart -- I don't like the RTi70..

    I like the RT5 and RT35i...

I feel the RTi70 lacks deeply in the high end...sounds bout like a damp cloth is draped over the tweet (to me)

The mids on the RTi70 fine...its just when you get to the cymbals, snare, acoustic guitar it sounds bad

Hey what do you think about RT800i's

In my opinion Polks are the best. Remember, your receiver or pre/pro and AMPs has to do lot more as well. You can't expect everything from your speakers alone. I would say 50% is your pre/pro & AMP or A/V receiver and the 50% goes to your speakers. In other words, better the input, better the output.

I love my Polks, they have everything, name it.

    :)

    BTW, congrats on your DefTechs.

Now you don't like the 70's????? hummmm I'm at a loss for words, I feel kinda disinfranchized after the heated sales from the past year and all. Now you like the newer 5's? after all the posts of how bright and cheeply made they were when they first came out, Geee now I'm confused...... I have heard Onkyo recievers make the Polks glass shattering bright (bad set-up settings at CC the Akron, Oh. store), so they can put out a brighter sound if that is where you need to be you are just going to have to look for a diff. reciever, like the Onkyo.

Just ribbing ya on the speakers

let me elaborate for you guys...

The Rti70 is the brightest speaker I own, in the worst way. With that brightness, it has no detail.

I have no experience with the RTi8...

The RT800i, I dont like the Tri Lam -- it is very bright compared to the Polymer in the RT5.

I like the RT5 very very much, very smooth.

Don't get your panties in a bunch here guys...

    I don't like the 70's top end...nuff said.

You may think it is the greatest thing since sliced bread...

I like the mids on it, I still think the mids are supperior to the upper end towers in that line.

I just plugged up the Def Tech to my soundcraftsmen (brought it from home) -- still testing them out, very impressed so far!

I like Polk man...I still like em. Def Tech and Polk are my favorite brands by far -- but I am just sick of looking at stacked speakers.

    WTH IS THE NEWER RT5???

That thing is like 7 years old! LOL, from the very first RT series.

Guys - I dont run a receiver. I run a 200 watt Soundcraftsmen on the RTi70, and a 100 watt Adcom on the RT5. I also use a NAD 917 preamp, a Denon DCM-280 source. I have all my basis covered on this, I believe I have reached the RTi70s full potential to an extent. I am sure they could be better...but I dont think it is my amp or preamps problem.

I really like Def Tech...and I really like Polk...

i figured this out about the 70's, I have a very small room for my Ht for now, my 70's tend to get bright at high volumes on music, I still like them alot... however you have a very small room as well.. i have concluded the smallness of the room has alot to do with the brightness of the polks.. ie: the Rti70's.... IMO its your room size, grant it bright is bright and not is not... but when your 6 foot away from the speakers... any speaker can get bright and harsh.... I think anyways.... you cant truley tell the full potential of a speaker in a small room period...

Well -- that may be the case, but the RT5 isnt to bright.

This Def Tech isnt to bright in my room here - but my room here is alot bigger.

    My room here is...

12x13x9 -- gives off one FUNKY echo effect..

Only complaint about the def tech so far, well 2 complaints..

The binding post are on the bottom of the speaker, wtf?
    and...they are short!

Newer is my bad. Still taking ribbing to heart, easy Sid I was only funnin ya. I think everyone that has read your posts on the speakers knows that you have endlessly tweeked them 70's to do what you want and to see what would happen if you did. That is at least the way I read into your posts. As for the Def's I have heard them and at least for me (model # ?) I wasn't real overwealingly impressed, now for me the B&W's that really floored me on 2 channel (again model # ? 609 comes to mind for some reason) both were in a Ultra HI-FI store and am not sure if I would pay those prices so I didn't pay close attention to the model #'s.

3 Things about the def tech that stand out that didnt stand out in the store...

    1) Bass
    2) Soundstage
    3) Detail...

It will VERY hard to get a good demo of the speakers I just picked up because of size alone...I had to sit on the floor to just get a 'decent' demo if you want to call it that.

I tweaked the RTi70 to the point where I just started shutting parts of it down...I got it to where I like - but something about it just dosnt sound right to me. Looking to see if the Def Tech can fill the gap - so far I am digging it man...friggin SWEETNESS

Dave was the first to catch it guys. Somebody give this man a prize. Oh the memories of Sid and his new 70's. How he talked them up at every opportunity, how he basically told people they made the wrong decision (instead of congratulating them) when they bought the larger model, how .. well, forget it.

I can see it happening already. He'll get a new amp. Something with a little less top end shall we say than the Adcoms. Something like that SoundCraftsmen, suddenly the DFs sound a little too laid back for his liking. Back to square.

Hey Sid, if you are no longer gonna bi-amp and stack, can I have 4 hours of my time back? Materials and postage are still free.

Congrats on the possible new speakers. Di-pole fronts when done correctly (like DF, Maggies, etc) can make for a real deep soundstage without sacrificing imaging or overall tone.

Yes, you may have your cables back.

I think it has been a known fact for a while that I disliked the 70s...

So far I like the Def Techs - but it is kinda hard to see what they can do on a Yamaha preamp and a POS Kenwood DVD Player. But...it seems pretty good so far.

E-Mail me your address gidrah: vr3mxxtrmespl2k3@hotmail.com

BTW - I already have the soundcraftsmen here, and the Def Techs are not laid back. I am looking for something to keep me at peace with my rig, I am tired of thinking something is missing.

Are you kidding? WTF am I gonna do with a set of 8 foot interconnects that go from source to 3 outs? Desolder them and save the wire and plugs? You can keep them. In fact put them in glass labelled "break in case of emergency". They're doing neither of us any good right now and would best be forgotten.

The best thing to do (above keeping them) would be to post an offering in the Flea Market for a *FREE* set of cables to this description. If anybody bites, you pay for Priority shipping. Other than that, go ahead and cannilabize them but use the same design. If you're not happy I'll give you your money back. Oh, wait...!

When I can afford to pay shipping, trust me...I am in a hole right now. I will put them on the flea market and offer them up to someone.

Infact, while I am at it...I will send you some money as well.

    Anyways - Back on subject.

With Bipolar speakers, would it matter if they face the wall at an angle? Right now I have them facing the wall straight on and it works fine, but in my room at my house they will be firing at an angle to the back wall...

If you can't afford 5 bucks then I guess you'd better detail another beamer or two.

    Room placement:
Far from the rear wall angled slightly in. Closer to the rear wall will give deterious effects in that the front wave might be cancelled by the rear wave. Most speakers benefit (these especially) by being angled slightly in. Corner loading will probably kill them due to the standing waves. As always, only you know how your speakers will sound in your room.

    Good friggin' luck
