it is a period of 40 hours where you play at half volume or less

depends on the sub......many believe the 10 minute theory. Once the sub hits it's max suspension travel its basically broke in....

If you want to be really careful, just do what cody^ said....

i tried the 2 day theory once...cracked the spiders on both my momos...id stick with the 40 hours unless you feel like shipping them back to polk for replacements

Whats always worked for me is let them get a little warm and eventually crank up the volume. Do this over several listening periods and you'll be set. 40 hour theory is good too.....but hey i'm just another car auido junkie :p

i read an article today that discussing breaking-in of subs. beyond stretching the spiders, there's nothing to 'wear together', as in an engine, and the specs of the sub (Fs, vas, etc.) don't change after break-in, so it's mostly just to get it heated-up.

also, many manufacturers (such as kicker) reccommend that you play the sub at full excursion at a low frequency (like 30) for a while to break it in... how is this different than playing it with music at full excursion?

Breaking in actually does change some of the characteristics. I'll try to dig up a site where a guy showed the same speaker and the T/S specs after certain amounts of break in. Is it a huge change though? heck no!

yeah, this article showed the ts specs before the short break-in, just after it was done, and the next day... the only time they were different is when the sub was still "hot"... at least according to this guy...
