Inadvertently obtained some Polk Cobras...

Hello all, new here,

I've thought I'd start by asking about Polk Cobra cables.... I've inadvertently obtained a pair (properly terminated, round version). Tested them, they work fine, though they are too long for my setup (prob about 2.5m) so the bundles are too big. Apparently these things are really sought after?

Not having a tube amp, I imagine i'm unlikely to see the qualities.

Chris

    Sought after? Not really.

Good for testing/destroying amplifiers with poorly implemented NFB (negative feedback) - and wide bandwidth.
Transformer coupled vacuum tube amplifiers shouldn't care much about them one way or another.

They were meant for the good/better quality ss amplifiers of their era (mid/late 1970s) but they're very reactive loads and can be tough on some amplifiers. I would think that well designed & built modern ss amplifiers shouldn't be destroyed by them, but, as @F1nut said (well, as he implied*), they're more of a curiosity/conversation piece at this late date.

They're kind of like those really, really hot hot peppers that destroy one's digestive tract if actually consumed. Yeah, yeah, go ahead and try some -- for the experience, you know? B)

I have read that 6 of them in parallel was the ultimate, according to some. Just think what the capacitance per ft. of that was/is!! They are pretty high resistance unless you paralleled them. If you use them with a "Zobel Network" you can use them on any amplifier. It's just a resistor and capacitor in series with each other, across the loudspeaker terminals. I forget what values but you can look up online. The idea of this type of cable is the extremely low inductance for great transient response.

They have a cool factor in certain circles.....but other than that, they aren't terribly special.

  • Actually they are #100 on Stereophile's list of history's most significant audio products.

Historically significant in that brought high end (or designer) cables into the collective consciousness......heretofore lamp cord being the standard.....but in and of itself, other than the cool factor I wouldn’t get super excited over them.

I had a pair and was very underwhelmed
