Yamaha R -9

A friend of mine has one hes selling, but hes in Dallas, says it can run in class A up to 30 watts, and it gets super hot in this mode, he said it came out in 85, are they any good, hate to waste the trip, Jimmy.
Not an Audiophile, just a dude who loves music, and decent gear to hear it with.

    I've had one since new...
    Still works and sounds great.
It drove my SDA 1Cs beautifully for a few years.

One of the better receivers in my opinion.

I had a couple of R9's in the past and your friend is right they do run hot in class A mode. I thought they were ok receivers that got the job done. Tuner section was ok and they had the typical Yamaha uncolored sound.

Nowadays I tend to look at something like that (hot running vintage piece) as a liability. FWIW I couldn't hear a difference between class A and regular mode. But I could see the increased electricity useage on my belkin conditioner in class A mode. If it's free or really cheap bring it home and play with it for a while.
