CA 851N question

I’m playing around with my new 851N. I have a Sony BDP-580 connected via coax. I have the Fragile CD/Blu-ray playing. I’ve selected the 24/96 LPCM version, but the screen on the 851N reads 48.0kHz PCM. Why is that? Shouldn’t it read 96.0kHz?

I am not sure if your BDP can output more than. 44.1 or 48 over coax. Probably need to check the manual...

I would agree with this. You may have to use a digital coax or HDMI if the 851 has such an option.

I’m using digital, coax and optical. I have an S580 and S590. Same result on both machines. I’m guessing the higher resolution only go through HDMI. Can’t find anything to confirm or refute that. I did find a site that said the DAC in the 590 is 24/192.

I also found a site that says I can rip SACDs with the 590.

I know that sacds can only be sent full resolution through hdmi. I am not sure about hi Rez blu ray discs...

I lucked out and found a dirt cheap, mint condition Oppo DV-980H. I figured that would probably output 96 kHz. So I pop in the Fragile disc and it won’t read it. Duh, it won’t read Blu-rays! Nonetheless, I have a John Hiatt hi-res DVD in the collection. I pop that in and it outputs it at 96 kHz. The 851n reads it at 96 kHz as well. So this seems to confirm that the Sonys only passes hi-res over HDMI. The Oppo is now my new transport. Besides having additional features, I think it sounds a little better than the Pioneer DV-45A I was using.
