Yep, new month and new computer question...external hard drive recommendations...

so, my Seagate is making those clunking/clanking sounds so i guess its time for a new external drive...all i need is a 1-2tb one and one that even I can install and not somebody at the computer place...want auto backup also, with easy instructions on how to do that...stick with Seagate, say a Backup Plus or something?

    1) For portable/backup drives, I've always used WD (a legacy of a long-ago family connection).
    2) Most of the 'putes here have been switched to SSDs, though -- and I love 'em.
    3) Get a NAS :)

I love mine. In fact, I just got another one that could take advantage of bigger drives.

2 x 6 TB drives in a Synology DS218 now. Listenin' to Carole King via the music therupon even as I type this.

    Here's the one that was my gateway drug :) a DS212 with 2 x 2TB drives.

Dunno but leaf through Western Digital's wares.
I am surprised no-one else's chimed in yet?!

(I am, as you can tell, far from expert)
  • I agree with a NAS setup, it can backup your computer and photos from your phones automatic

Go with Mark Hardy's suggestion & get a NAS.

Synology has an included bone-simple-to-use backup solution. Almost set & forget.

Next thing you know you'll be streaming lossless/DSD to your RPi/Allo :-)

Dont stream right now and it will probably be a number of years before i do as i have a ton of CD's and LP's to clean and listen to first.

Investigated the NAS and right now that is just too expensive for us...

    Understood.
For me it was a "Buy it once, buy it right" kind of thing.

I used to use the Western Digital MyBook series regularly for various work stuff. If you go that route, go for the larger desktop version, though, not the small bus powered portables.

Seagate had some problems years ago with consumer disks, and some models were failing left and right with that telltale clicky/slappy sound just before going inaccessible. They may be back to reliable, but WD's been solid for the most part so I've just stuck with them.

Their MyBook disks come with backup software, if I remember correctly. Or you could just use the built-in Windows Backup if you want a full system image and backup.

Maybe check out the WD site and the MyBook series to see what comes with them these days?
    I disabled signatures.

1-2 TB is well within the range of an affordable SSD and you won't have to worry about it clunking a few years down the line.

If you were looking for 10x that capacity I'd point you to a NAS.
