Desktop Powered Speaker Suggestions
I'm looking for some small speakers for my computer desk. There's not a lot of real estate, so smaller the better. Budget is probably $200-$300 or so.
My boys are starting to get into making their own music on the computer and we need something for playback. Right now we're just dealing with the speakers on the laptop...
Appreciate any suggestions!

Slightly over budget but I'm sure trolling ebay or the like could net a lower price- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
I'd suggest Quad 11L or 12L actives. They are over budget, but well worth it.PS Audio Stellar Gain Cell DAC/Preamp

I have the Kanto YU6 and very satisfied with their performance. They have also the YU4 and YU2 smaller versions.

I really like powered monitors. I use Audioengine HD3s, but I'd be checking out the Kantos that Rey mentioned - the YU6, YU4 and YU2. I'm curious as to how these compare to Audioengine. Nice feature set in the 6 and 4.
The HD3s have a 2-3/4" Kevlar mid/woofer that really surprises for its size. Front slot ported. I've found these to be a perfect fit for listening within 3ft, not to say they don't make for great background experience, as well.
The YU4 offers a larger driver which may be preferable if you're further away from them.
The Kanto YU2 looks most comparable to Audioengine's HD3/A2+ speaker.
I was always curious about some of the Edifer models, too.
You can build a really pleasing little 2ch near field with powered monitors and a sub.
Presonus is another brand to check into, but I've no experience with them nor have I done much reading on them. They seem to offer some additional adjustment.I disabled signatures. -

The six inch gets plenty loud and hits hard enough with no sub needed but if you really want a monster these 8"s are Huge!

Really cool history about this company they are all former audio engineers from Harmon and other companies and so far there first six inch monitors have really made a splash for under $300.

x2 Yes I agree for a little over $115, these are what my buddy uses and really fun and play loud for little speakers, not a real monitor or tool, but great for entertainment listening and a good deal!

Oh man, so many choices! I've had my finger just over the buy button a couple times already. I might be holding off for a little bit though. We're talking about getting a new desk for the equipment. That would give me some more room to work with and make the slightly larger speakers an option.

Thanks again for all of the help. I ended up going with PreSonus Eris E5. I narrowed my search specifically for "monitor" speakers since the intent is for the kids to use them when making music. The Kali's and Mackie's were tough to turn down, but in the end I am very happy with these. Great detail and phenomenal soundstage. How loud is the hiss from the tweeter when nothing is playing?
-
Noticeable if you try to hear it, not noticeable otherwise. At least to my ears, but nobody else in the house has mentioned it.Pro-ject 2 Experience SB, OPPO BDP-103, Marantz SR5011, Lounge LCR MKIII, McCormack DNA-HT5, Polk LSiM705, Polk LSiM706C, Polk LSiM702, SVS SB16-Ultra

Cool, hope they provide many years of enjoyment. I have the Presonus R80 speakers and they sound good.
