A new toy....RT400
Well... they arrived today via UPS from an E-bay auction. They are damaged because one of the magnets was laying in the bottom of the cabinet. This isn't suprising since this was the WORST packing job of any eletronics or audio I have ever recieved from anyone. The guy really didn't want to send them as he said double boxing made shipping prohibative ($100 ± ). He said shipping in the Polk boxes would be around $35. I asked him to just pack them well and try the Polk boxes. All the ****ing idiot did was to put a couple of lightweight corner pieces of styrofoam (not the original Polk packing pieces) on the corners and tape up the boxes. Of course the styrofoam was in tiny pieces in the bottom of the boxes. If the Driver/magnet is all that is damaged I guess I'm lucky. I think he wanted to back out of the deal because I was the only bidder and they went cheap. I guess he was pissed when I wouldn't go along.
I guess I break them down tomorrow and see what can be done. I hope they were insured as I asked. I think I know where I can get a single speaker cheap.
Here is a picture...I'll hook them up as soon as the repairs are made and give a review.

I can't really remember that model. Is that a 7" MW paired with the polymer tweeter like was in the RT3/RT5?
How much did they go for? -
Yes, same series.
They actually carried forward and were sold along with the original 600, 800, 1000 etc.
And as the models mentioned above, the model number corresponded with the price per pair. I always liked the 400's, I'd love to have a pair. Very robust, and easy on the ears (and eyes).

The RT400s are one of those speakers that I've seen from time to time but never heard. I found a single speaker and it intriqued me and I did a little research, They would be on e-bay every few months. What little there was in the form of reviews was very positive. The only info I've been able to find out about them is the following description:

Given the packing (or lack of) they actually came though UPS quite well and the exterior is pretty good. A couple of cosmetic nicks can be fixed. I'm guessing the magnet loose in the box is the bucking magnet and should be an easy fix. I'm looking forward to hooking these up and giving them a listen to see if they live up to the glowing (although few in #) reviews."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

While playing around with my speakers a few weeks ago, a small, thin magnet fell off. It was only a bucking magnet and the tweeter could still function properly without it. The bucking magnet is just there to prevent interferece on your television screen. All I had to do was glue it back on behind the real magnet.. I called CS to confirm it was the bucking magnet and it was.
Take the magnet out and inspect the driver.

I really like the RT series. They have a sound which agrees with me. I hope you like them..

I found the problem and it wasn't the bucking magnet...It was the magnet from the tweeter. I epoxied it back on and hooked them up. After a quick test everything seems to be ok. I can't do much of a demo today as we have friends coming over for a cookout and a swim. What little I've heard is positive. That's great news. Use Krazy Glue and that sucker won't be going anywhere.
