Polk Audio F/x Wireless Surround Speaker System - Transmitter Stopped Working

I have had this system for a number of years and it has been great...until the other day when there was a loud pop and then silence out of the unit. After a bit of investigating I found that the transmitter was off, and then found that the power supply for the transmitter had died...then I searched for a replacement and found absolutely nothing!

As it turns out this is a very odd item, it is actually two different power transformers in one with a S-Video plug that goes to the transmitter unit. As I didn't want to pay a lot for a replacement I decided to make one myself using the diagram off of the original power supply, an s-video cord, a 5VDC plug-in transformer, and a 12VDC plug-in transformer.

*****I WOULDN'T RECOMMEND THIS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING.*****

Cut off one end of the s-video cable and splice the 5VDC and the 12VDC transformers into the correct conductors in the s-video cable using the diagram on the original power supply. Verify you're connecting the correct wires by testing the continuity of the bare conductors using a multi-meter to identify which conductor goes to which pin in the s-video connector. MAKE SURE YOU TEST EVERYTHING WITH A MULTIMETER BEFORE YOU PLUG THIS INTO THE TRANSMITTER, IF YOU DON'T YOU MAY DAMAGE THE TRANSMITTER IF YOUR WIRING IS NOT CORRECT.

I don't know how many of these Polk Audio F/x Wireless Surround Speaker System units are still in use, but I hope this post can help others with this same problem. I love mine and I'm glad it's back up and running.

  • Thanks so much for posting this! Im not afraid to try this but if there is a way you can post a picture of what you put together, that would be great. I thought all along it was something to do with the internal circuitry of the transmitter box itself.

Do you think if I found an s-video cable and connected it to the s-video output on my receiver, it would have enough power to turn on the transmitter? That would be great if it did.
