The simplest, scariest "spud amp" I have yet seen

Serves me right for looking at old copies of Radio-TV Experimenter on worldradiohistory.com
I mean, with an isolation transformer, it wouldn't be scary any more (at least)

As to the "X" in the schematic... quoth the text:
mmmm-hmmm...
Now I wanna build one. Those cartridges aren't all that different than a line-level signal (although the loading might be a bit different).

"Shock that might result from handling metal pick -up arm on a record player can be prevented by inserting a .05 mfd 200 volt paper capacitor at (X) in Fig. 5 and mounting the phono jack on a Bakelite disc. However, most modern pick -up arms are plastic. The only chance for a shock from touching chassis is when you're standing on a damp concrete floor or touching some grounded object. "

I dunno, the world's simplest vacuum tube amplifier may also be the world's worst. It just caught my eye by its sheer minimalism. Besides the tube (combined pentode & half-wave rectifier) and socket, it has a power switch, an RCA jack, a volume control pot, three capacitors (4 with the "death cap"), two resistors, and an output transformer.

The more I look at that schematic, the more I marvel that it does anything.
... and that piques my curiosity.
(as in Here. Hold my beer.)
Time to check the big box o'plinkers in the basement.
If you see a WTB ad for a 117L7 (or 117M7)... you'll know why...

I realized this morning that this is definitely a Hallowe'en-themed thread topic. This is definitely a scary amplifier.
