Best in open field running and he helped change the game. Clips of his running/floating across muddy rutted fields are things of beauty. A legend even though his career was shortened by injury.

  • With his friend Brian Piccolo.

RIP Gale. He's from Omaha. My assistant, his age, went to the same high school. He was her chemistry partner. She told me this morning, in chem. class he inadvertently burned the top of her hand with a Bunsen burner. She liked him. She said everyone did, she said he was quiet and just a cool dude. Simple, not full of himself.

    Edit:
Gale also excelled at track. He held the Nebraska high school broad jump record for nearly four decades.

Thanks for the link. This is the first I’ve heard that it was CTE. Others have attributed it to dementia, but of course, one suspects it’s related to his career.
