D.I.Y DVD & CD Racks....

I'm curious as to how many of you have custom made DVD shelves or racks? I've always been a fan of wall mounted racks, but how plausible is it? I guess depending on how you crafted it, it could really work well. You'd most likely need brace supports, ect, correct?

I guess why i'm asking here is because i'm interested in doing something like this. I've got about 220 DVDs right now and that list seems to grow almost weekly or bi-weekly. I'm not a big fan of any of the racks at your Wal-Mart, Target, ect....

Any suggestions? Pics of your D.I.Y racks?

Wow...those are really cool. I may have to get those, but i'm more of a fan of darker wood, like walnut.

The shelves are adjustable. I can't remember how many DVDs. I'll try and give you an estimate when I get home.

Saddly, they only comes in birch. I've had many people comment on how they really like them. My good buddy picked up a couple after he saw mine. Damn Jackass! ;)

You may be calling me a jackass too, because depending on their capacity I may own some as well. :)

I like the light you can put in as well. :)

It's no secret that the DIY flexy-racks are strikingly similar to the Salamander Archetype 5.0 design. So with that being said and after completing my own DIY flexy rack for the electronics, I have been pondering tackling something like this:

    http://www.salamanderdesigns.com/media/downloads/fm450.pdf

Two nicely stained pieces of wood for the ends, 4 all-thread rods with nuts / washers for stabilization / hold it all together, and then countersink some holes into the ends and make some "runners" out of some thinner pieces of wood. I'm thinking of how to assemble the "runners" that is if glueing them after putting together with some finishing nails would do the trick. I'm thinking I could build one of these for about $50. No dust protection here though.

It'll hold roughly 19 dvds per shelf and 6 or 7 shelves. You may be cutting it close with 2 of them.

Thanks. Do you have a digital camera? I wouldn't mine seeing pictures of yours on the wall. Just curious how they look with the DVDs. If not, cool.

I use Mylex Media Tower shelf for DVDs and CDs. Each shelf cost me $50 Canadian and I have 4 of them lining together on side of the room. Each can hold approx. 140 DVDs. I've 508 DVD titles and lot of CDs.

I bought it from Staples in Toronto. Love it. The depth is same as DVD keep case so they don't take lot of space.

Wish if I had a picture to post!

(I was unable to see any of the links), but if your a handy type of guy, you can always make your own fairlly easy. You can pick up a piece of birch plywood at the Home Depot for about $50. Cut it into 8 6" strips. Cut 6 of those in half (4' lengths). Attached them about 8 1/2" apart (with a top and a bottom), and you have an 8' wall of DVDs with 11 shelves 4' wide. Add some decorative molding, and you have a work of art. The birch stains nicely any color (I did my master bedroom closet in a mohagany red stain).

This is basically what I plan on doing (but have an elaborate design that intergrates into the component shelves/speakers/sub all with mohagany edging).

buy or build, either way, have fun.

    dcarlson,

Man those do look cool. What a way to save floor space. Do those just screw into the 2 X 4 studs in the wall for support?

Mmmm... I love their stuff. Got DVD racks, CD racks and my TV stand from them. Pricey, but worth it (IMO).

You could paint them but you won't be able to refinish them, they're a vinyl sort of laminate.

I used some toggle bolts to hangs them. I'm sure you could screw them right into the studs.

I wish they were recessed into the wall, but no.

Dunno if you like the metal look, but I use two of THESE and have really liked them.

Here's a pic of them in my place....

The feet in the first pic look a little small, as mine have wider feet for stabilization.....

Yeah, those don't look too bad either and there are different finishes as well. I like the look of that stuff on Boltz, but it seems too expensive. The Atlantic stuff looks more reasonably priced.

Here's the Atlantic for $20 cheaper than the other site.......add shipping (can't find how much that is without going through checkout).......might be a better deal though.....

That one has the wider feet, but doesn't specify finish other than just showing the black. You might be able to call them and get the chrome.....

    Thanks.

I went on EBay and checked out those wood cabinets with the 1500+ DVD capacity. Those look pretty sweet too, but I couldn't justify the shipping price.

I'm a little torn. I really like those IKea ones that DC has, but those racks you posted aren't bad either and they're much cheaper.

I'm moving in about a month so I have a bit of time to decide.

For me it was a cost/benefit thing. I couldn't justify paying $100-300 for a rack(s) that wouldn't hold as many as the Atlantic for $70 (I paid retail) that holds virtually 2-4 times as many DVD's.......

I'd be all over those racks from Ikea if they were actually inset to the wall and larger, but (nothin personal DC) I don't like things(other than actual shelving) gettin all 3-Dish on my walls. Depends on how it would fit into the decor I suppose....

    Good luck

I know what you mean, I'd love to recess them into the wall. I got one as an xmas gift from my bro and bought the other for the rest of my collection.

It's much better than the floorstanding shelves I had, and keeping the dust out is a HUGE plus.

I've been to IKEA a lot, but I don't remember if those units having a glass door on them. I know they indicate that on IKEA's site, but I can't really tell if there is a glass door on yours or not. Take a pic from the side with the glass door open if you wouldn't mind.....

When I was putting my collection into that website, I did notice dust on the tops of my DVD's that I hadn't really paid attention to. Nothin that a duster on a stick couldn't take care of in a few swipes.....

****!!! That's EXACTLY why I didn't say feather duster and instead meant one of those static dusters blah blah blah.....

Where you get that I'd be in anything like that is beyond me. I might make someone else get into that outfit (temporarily), but hey, that might be TMI......:D :D
