If prices of used Oppo 205's keep pulling down these kinds of prices I may need to reconsider selling mine. So what could I replace it with that does all it can do? What 4K uni-players are there out in the market place for 3 large?

Stuff like this always leaves me scratching my head, how a company drops such a well loved product. Same thing with the Logitech Squeezebox. Streamers were just becoming popular when they dumped it.

What did the 205 sell for when new?

    1300.00

I bought mine when Larry posted a link for the last go around. Direct from Oppo to my house. I got on the waiting list and they contacted me to purchase.

Look at the completed Ebay listings for the Oppo if you really want to shake your head. If anyone purchased one as a spare I hope you didn't open the box. Those sell for ~$5000

I might part with mine too for that kind of money. I purchased a second one and flipped it already, but given the amount of use it gets and that I could care less about movie performance, it may be time to go.

You can buy some decent audio gear for $5000........and who watches DVD's anyway.

Note: Yes, I said it and I don't mind people blasting me and disagreeing saying DVD's are great. Just don't be the same people who called me unsophisticated for still listening to CD's. That will narrow it down a lot.

I have a $500 Panasonic BDP that plays 4K and I am betting (based on reviews online) that the performance is within 95% of the Oppo.
    Pocket the $2500

I watch DVD and Blu Ray movies regularly. I also listen to CD, SACD and vinyl all the time. Physical media is where it's at.

I buy as many as I can that I loke of course. I feel time is short to buy physical media these days. I've read more than one of my audio mags we're basically the large houses do not want us to have CDs and DVDs and 4K discs they would like us to stream so therefore we never actually own anything so they can sell it to us over and over.
you know kind of like remastered CDs and records and other things like that. You know when they remaster stuff I've noticed that a lot of the times remastered stuff is not as good as the original stuff they just tricked us into buying new stuff....

Think about how many time folks had bought Led Zeppelin CDs...

They must be on their fifth incarnation of those now.

The Panasonic UB9000 is the best going at the moment that is available...

    https://www.crutchfield.com/S-4aBKuRl6r4A/p_133UB9000/Panasonic-DP-UB9000.html

There was a comparable Pioneer Elite unit around for a while, and an even better $2500 one overseas, but I have not seen those available lately. I would not recommend spending big money on an Oppo even though I have a 205 and 203.

The Panasonic does not play SACD, but someone would be better off using a separate player for that anyway. It does stream Amazon and Netflix which the Oppo units did not. Video performance is comparable. With an Oppo 205 and 203 I don’t see a reason to sell either but if one broke in the near future and could not be fixed by Oppo I would be ok with buying a Panasonic player. Probably the next model down though since it would only be for video.

I have two Oppo 203 for watching movies. However, for some reason, I can't get interested enough anymore to watch a movie. I must have a couple hundred new, unwatched BluRays, and a Netflix movie gathering dust.

If I had a modwright205 this thread would have never been.....

I had planned on getting the upgraded power supply and couple of other upgrades. I have not ruled out a modwright upgrade, all depends on how flush with cash I am next year :)

Sony has for decades not advertised what DAC chips they use for audio playback other than saying the unit is 24 bit, 32 bit, etc. Most of their products have some proprietary changes inside them anyway.

The X1100ES appears to have added Dobly Vision as an option for video compared to the previous model.
