Greetings,
Some mid summer pictures of my garden. Things are still growing but I spend a lot of time watering in this heat

What a nice area to sit and relax in.
Was that brick structure originally some kind of outdoor oven? -
Beautiful Carl, obviously a passion. Some kind of stinking bug has eaten all the blooms from our Lillies

It looks great!
but... when I think garden, I think stuff I can eat.

Looks great, Carl! And I agree with Drew, that looks like a great space to relax. I, also, am intrigued by that outdoor fireplace structure, because we're men, and men like fire.
With ya on the frustration, Mike! I put in a buncha different wildflower seeds this year for some color and character where I grow tomatoes and stuff, and the Japanese beetles tore me up! Never saw them before, but those little guys are relentless. Finally got some beetle traps which helped, but it took them a couple of weeks to vacate. I resorted to squishing them and leaving them on the leaves as a warning to others, Game of Thrones style. Lost Zen points, but something about the smell of dead comrades is supposed to ward them off.Post edited by msg onI disabled signatures. -
Scott, can this crushed beetle paste also be applied topically behind the ears for health benefits and increased libido?

I've also been crushing the buggers. Seems to work as a wife repellent.Yep, my name really is Bob.

I may be tipping my hand a bit too much about my true character -- but, after a half-dozen years of gardening in the Granite State, I've reached the point that I take a certain perverse delight in crushing both Japanese beetles and potato bug larvae.
Mrs. H likes to brush them into a container containing soapy water (the soap delipidates their spiracles, I think, so that they cannot 'breathe'), which is OK, too. I drew a skull & crossbones on her container, though. -
Scott, I've used the Beetle Traps before, turned out I was basically drawing them in by the 1,000's and just making things worse
They work fast as they can strip a small tree, scrubs and plants literally over night. -

"Asian" style lilies (true lilies) or "day lilies"?
In the former case, there's a gnarly pest called the scarlet lily beetle. The larvae start low and work their way up the plants, stripping them bare. They're actually fairly easy to mitigate (see my previous post ) if one gets an early start on 'em.
We did a pretty good job salvaging the lilys here this year (although some of ours are starting to get a little tired).
For day lilies (and not that anyone asked ), our biggest problem is deer snacking on them when the buds are tender. Deer are much harder to crush than are Japanese beetles, plus there are laws about such things -- so we use physical barriers and repellents with modest to good success. It pays to rotate different kinds of repellent, but my current favorite is some truly offensive looking & smelling stuff (when freshly applied only, thankfully) called Plantskydd.

Tiger Lilies, I guess an Asian Lily? And another variety (big plants) and large blooms, but no Day Lilies. This is the first year they have attacked by these pesky scarlet beetles. I've sprayed with an Insecticide once and will repeat again.
