DVD disk skipping. What to do?

What do you do when your DVD freezes?
I was watching LOTR - ROTK this evening and the DVD sputtered and froze on scenes 34 and 35. The only thing I could do was forward it to the next scene, so we missed part of the scene with the big spider and some of the battle sequences. After the movie was over, I went into the scene selection and still couldn't access scenes 34 and 35.
There's no visible damage to the disk. Should I return it and get a refund? Or is the problem with the DVD player?

MOST places won't refund money on open movies, only exchange for a different copy of the *same* movie.
I've had this freezing/skipping problem. On some movies, I honestly think the combination of ones and zeros in a certain scene give my budget player fits... no visible marks on the disk, always at *exactly* the same place in the movie. I also know it doesn't take much of a scratch/mark/smudge to cause some players to skip. My copy of Shrek skips most of the scene where Robin and his merry men are singing/dancing (my favorite scene, which is infuriating). No visible problems, yet a very good cleaning helped (didn't solve) the problem. I need to try a more desperate cleaning .....
Try playing the movie on a different player (even if you take it in to some store), see if you get different results. If so, I don't think exchanging the movie for a different copy will help... you'd have to buy a better player, which is the boat I'm in.. and the next purchase as soon as I actually have extra money and can convince my wife of the .. uh.. 'necessity.' -

Some movies just do that......
I'd at least take it back and have them switch it out for you.......comment comment comment comment. bitchy. -
I've heard that if you use a toothpaste with baking soda in it, gently wet the disk, and sort of 'rub' it over the disk's bottom in circular motions, it can get rid of some scratches. Also have tried car wax, which has worked for me. Some players have trouble with some dual layer disks, so if it's not scratched maybe thats the problem.

I'd go back and swap it for another copy. While you're there spend about $15 on a cleaner.Make it Funky!
