Good link dcarlson. Definitely a good explanation even though I have some difficulty understanding all of the theory behind it (over my head a bit).

That Cardas "insights" link is pretty interesting as well. Some good reading there.

Yeah, half the stuff flies miles over my head and the insights is a really cool section for sure.

does any cable or speaker company burn-in their product before shipping?

if i was selling a product that i believed needed a "break-in" or "burn-in" period to perform at its best, i would include that as part of the manufacturing process.

at the prices of high end cable and speakers, a burn in period would be feasible right?

A good example of why I wouldn't want the manufacturer to break in the goods, is the same reason why I expect my new car to only have like 10 miles on it.

I believe car engines still need a break-in period before you can start to push/drive them hard. There's something about knowing you are getting a brand new good (not broken in), and breaking it in yourself, then relying on someone else to do it for you.

I have to agree with lonwa. Some people just prefer to break things in on their own. Speakers are a good example.

For manufacturers, the break in / burn in process just adds cost and manhours. I can understand paying $200 and above for a powercable and the frustration some folks may have with having to burn it in yourself after paying that much for a powercable.

I for one, like having a "virgin" cable and breaking it in on my own and noticing the changes over time. If I can find a great deal on a used cable though, the money savings is more of an attraction than burning it in on my own.

I needed to burn in my Cardas Cross powercord a couple of times. The first time when I bought it and then again when I moved. I coilled it up for the move and it totally messed with it. It took a full week for it to return to normal.
