I know people here have built their own subs and speakers, but I was wondering if anyone has ever attempted an amp. I saw a book about it and thought it could be fun. Plus I may catch something on fire!:D

There are several amp and pre-amp kits on the market if you want to check them out. Try the Grounded Grid. Very highly regarded. There are others. Maybe someone else will chime in.
HT/2-channel Rig: Sony 50” LCD TV; Toshiba HD-A2 DVD player; Emotiva LMC-1 pre/pro; Rogue Audio M-120 monoblocks (modded); Placette RVC; Emotiva LPA-1 amp; Bada HD-22 tube CDP (modded); VMPS Tower II SE (fronts); DIY Clearwave Dynamic 4CC (center); Wharfedale Opus Tri-Surrounds (rear); and VMPS 215 sub

    What kind of amp?

If you want a real beginner's style kit that isn't too complicated but will really challenge you and give you some good insight, go and get the K-502 stereo tube amp from Antique Electronics Supply. It's a simple design and very clean. It's easy to put together with even basic soldering skills. It will teach you some basic things about circuits too and show you the nitty gritty of an amplifier. I built this amp myself and everyone who has heard it powering a pair of KLH 17's has had nothing but good things to say about it.

You can find Antique Electronics Supply at http://www.tubesandmore.com but becareful, you may end up getting bit by the tube bug!

I started to build a couple of low wattage mono chip amps, but have since gotten sidetracked. I don't have the link here (I'm at work) but can put one up if you like. So far, it has been very easy, cheap, and I'm expecting it to sound pretty good.

    Thanks guys,

Gidrah I'd love the link, and the tube amp sounds cool too. Just what I need, another black-hole hobby:p

Scroll down. It's the CPS50. You'll need 2 and you should order the power supply kit mentioned. I didn't get one. If I had gotten it I'd probably be done by now. Instead they sit. The transformer, heatsink, connectors, and the thermal goop stuff can all be found at your local RS.

How much skill at soldering does this take. I'm okay at it. Sounds like fun one way or the other.
