    Chickens eat ticks ... a friend of mine has chickens in his large yard to eat the ticks to protect his dogs... one of his dogs will eat a chicken now and then.... meh... circle of life kinda thing.

    ... and you just can't beat fresh eggs. Well, OK, of course, you can beat 'em --otherwise, I mean, how could you make omelets with 'em? But, like, they're really good.

    well many cities are now allowing a few( 6-8) chickens no roosters for eggs and fresh meat. In many they are not allowed to run free so to speak but must be put in the hutch at night and fenced in.

    Chickens also kill scorpions! My bro in laws house in Phoenix had a nasty scorpion problem until that got some chickens, which do get eaten by the coyotes if not locked up...

    In the wintertime, we like to feed (dried) mealworms to the birds, to augment the protein intake of species that are normally insect eaters (e.g., bluebirds). You can easily buy dried mealworms for bird feeding, but they're kinda spensive. Turns out, though, that the local feed store sells 'em in large quantities (buckets!) for feeding to chickens -- and they're much cheaper.

    So, here's the funny part -- and I'll leave it to the reader to decide if it's "ha-ha" funny or the other kind of "funny" :| The slogan printed on the bucket of dried mealworms proclaims:
    They're clucking good.

    PS So... I am a biochemist/biologist. I've done animal surgery. I watched both of my children being born by C-section. I am none too squeamish... but... I get some kind of primitive, cerebellar, reflexive ewwwwww response* whenever I open up that plastic bucket and gaze down into that phalanx of dried (but lifelike-looking) mealworms. I react to it sorta like Indiana Jones & snakes -- or Humphrey Bogart and leeches in The African Queen. :|
