surround height placement

Please, can anyone tell me in theory what is the best placement for surround speakers when the listening position is a couch against the back wall and side wall placement is not available.

Right now my surrounds are RT15i's mounted on the wall with the couch, just about at ear level. My mains are RT35i's at ear level on speaker stands about 7' forward of the listening position. Each speaker splits the room into 1/3'rds.

Should I raise my surrounds closer to the ceiling at about 7' or leave them alone?

And does it matter that the mains and surrounds face each other forming a square? I was thinking that maybe the sound waves might be cancelling eachother out in this configuration.

Thanks
