Turntable / cartridge issue

My buddy has a Denon DP-37f turntable (IIRC) and a Denon DL-80a cart. No sound coming from turntable. He told me he thought the stylus had snapped off. However, this morning I looked at the stylus with an admittedly crummy little magnifying glass but it appears the diamond is still imbedded. Previously, I loaned him an external phono preamp to assure there was not a problem with his internal phono preamp (Adcom) Still no sound from turntable so I'm thinking issue is turntable or cart, however I have never seen a cart just cease functioning suddenly, with no sound emitting whatsoever. Would like to hear from anybody as to their thoughts on what problem could be and how further to track down the issue. I could put another cartridge on his headshell to see if that produces sound but that's a pain so I'd rather wait on that to hear if anybody has any ideas. Thanks.

Only issue it could be with the turntable not causing sound would be the leads. Check the continuity of each lead and check the same with the IC. If all OK there then cartridge has some problems internally.
