Flat paint jobs first became a thing when the police started using laser assisted radar guns to clock speeders because the laser guns had an "instant on" so you had no warning that a speed trap was ahead using a radar detector. Those and making radar detector use illegal pretty much killed the detector market. Some people figured out if they used flat paint on everything except the glass would render these guns ineffective. Eventually the radar manufacturers made a dual use radar/laser gun but by then the detectors for the masses were out of use.

The flat paint doesn't prevent you from getting a ticket though because the police can just say " Son, I don't know how fast you were going but I'm giving you a ticket anyways" and in court they would say " Based on the fact you were passing two cars, traveling at 55 miles per hour, that were fifty feet apart in approximately 3 seconds we calculated your actual speed at..."

Don't ask me how I know.

And why car makers charge extra for a matte finish is beyond me. I hope this fad fades.

When the matte finishes get old, do they get shiny?
    Just curious... ;)

Rat rod rust will be the next fad. :)

Yeah if they made vehicles with sheet metal the thickness of an 1840s railroad trestle.

Now I would go for this paint job if the vehicle were similarly equipped, you wouldn't much have to worry about tickets.

I'm not digging the matte finish either! Love the shiny top coats, freshly waxed, slippery to the touch. But then again, I'm a chrome guy too! Had to special order chrome bumpers on my truck, as the stock finish was painted.

In some cases, the matte finish can actually be molded into the material. Cost savings if done correctly. Hard to do on big body panels, but the smaller bits can usually be molded in color.
