40th Anniversary of the greatest upset in the history of sport.

The 1980 US Olympic Hockey team beat the Russians 4-3 in Lake Placid

For those unfamiliar, this was a huge moment in US history - a gigantic morale booster after years of being dragged down by a horrific period of American history.

What made this a Miracle is that the whole American team was comprised of Amateurs while the USSR team was comprised of what were basically roided-up pros. The Soviets skirted the regulations, and basically had all pro-level players with long histories of international play, and who had won gold during the past four previous Olympics They even had on their team, at the time, Vladislav Tretiak, who was considered the best living goaltender of his time.

And this rag-tag bunch of American cowboy amateurs beat them fair and square, in front of the entire world.

Thus, it was proven that the Bear could bleed, and the following decade would produce the collapse of the Soviet Union.
