New floor in HT family room

So I got a wild hair and ripped up the carpeting and old tile underneath it and decided to tile my family room.

I love the look and feel of real (porcelain) tile and decided to do the base in mosaic and bullnose and made a mosaic strip to divide the rooms in what we have in Florida called an "open floor plan".

I haven't gotten everything hooked up yet but I know I will be challenged acoustically to get the room close to what it was but will perhaps add some free standing panels and a smallish area rug to compensate for all the tile... Still have some wiring and config work to do and won't get that done till the end of the week.

Sub to the left? or to the right?I can widen out the 705's and put the sub inside the 705's too.

Looks awesome Mikey! Clearly you have no chillins in the house lol...

I think I would spread the speakers as wide as possible, put the sub on the inside. Wider soundstage, and sub as close to the center channel as possible.

Haven't hooked anything up yet but I expect it to be brighter for sure.... I am going to experiment with some room treats and maybe a small rug... I think I am going to move the sub inside.... I am also considering 2 smaller subs....The PB-13 is a BMF and limits placement options but it is a ported BEAST of a sub... Might consider selling it tho...

I have a fairly "lively" room for my home theater gear too. Hardwood floors and windows all around with wood blinds over them. I found a couple of smaller subwoofers (SB2000s) between my LSiM707s worked better than one larger subwoofer. The SVS Soundpath feet helped a lot to prevent things around the room from rattling.

There's not much that can be done with the room above from what I can see. A rug in front of the system may help, but those windows are going to be reflecting as much if not more than the floor is. If it were me, I'd just let the auto calibration work and leave things the way they are. The LSiM series is not an inherently bright speaker, so that may help too. I would also not bother trying to set that system up to optimize two channel. A lively home theater room can be a good thing!

I talked to SVS this AM and asked if they would extend to me the dual price if I bought a second SVS SB4000 and then I would go dual subs... That ported Pb13 Ultra is too frikken big and appropriately named... because it is like Pb (lead).

They would offer me a 5% (Like $75)repeat customer discount but I sent him to his leader to see if I could get the full $200 that I would have got if I would have ordered them within 1 year of each other.

We'll see!

So SVS called me back and gave me a $200 discount off of the SB4000 and I ordered it.

The SB 4000 doesn't dig quite as low as the PB 13 but it will work fine for HT...

The folks at SVS customer service are GREAT... I'll just leave that there.

Mikey, Your new floor looks great! I'm not a big fan of carpet either, other than it helps with sound absorption. Always trade offs, I'm sure you'll have the room sounding very good.

Electrician coming tomorrow to install ded. 20A and to run some new speaker cables to the rears... In the old setup I had the cables under the carpet and thru some grooves in the old tile / grout lines which served ok... Now getting 2 runs of AQ 14/4. for the rears and sides. It will be 7.2 when done....

The one thing that's better than a great sub is two of them! Don't forget the shallow roll-off of sealed vs. ported. You'll have plenty of low end at all seats!

I'm sure you plan to put both inside of the L& R speakers. However, be sure to try different placement options if possible. Like opposed walls, corners, etc...

Also, did you consider the SB-3000? Its smaller, $500 cheaper, overachiever that might make one consider three of them vs. two SB-4000's for the same money. Two up front off one output, and one behind the the listening position off the other output.

I'd take dual SB4000 over a single PB13/16 any day. Yes the PB might dig a little lower but the dual subs will be a lot more even.

So added a dedicated 20 amp quad behind the cabinet... Got the new speaker wires run and I terminated them today and set up the system with 1 SB4000 on the right... I ran the Audessy XT32 utility . The second SB 4000 will get here on Monday.... The subs will be inside the fronts. I have the single SB 4000 configured for now... 2 will definitely be rockin' the slab

How much did that run you? I am going to need the same for my new room.

Electrical wire/parts about $70

Audio wire and parts < $400

My neighborhood electrician and his helper $100/ hr. (cash) $400...

He ran the wires and did the electrical terminations and I did the audio terminations.

All in about $900 ish...
