Kicking the tires
I thought I'd share a bit of info on how I kick the tires on speakers. The recording of Strauss's Also Sprach Zarathustra by Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic recorded in the early 80's by Deutsche Grammophone (Karajan Gold label) is the best recording I know of to test out new speakers. The intro (commonly known from 2001: A Space Odyssey) has amazing highs and the lowest lows I've ever heard on a classical recording. Of course, other recordings would be needed to evaluate personal taste for rock playback and what not, but for sheer frequency response I can't think of a better recording. Anyone else have some favorites for testing out speakers?

I like playing stuff I've heard a millions times. If I don't hear anything new or different, I'm generally not very impressed.
