I do believe they came in 4ohm and 8ohm if that is what you're getting at.
And yes unless there is a hole under that, that is not very good on the dome.

Also, they seem to corrode more where the gasket was, surprisingly, but you can see that the gasket (which is missing) never could've made a complete seal.........

Here's some interesting Peerless tweeters that are made in Denmark and appear to be 1992 vintage and are 8 Ohms. $52 for the pair on fleabay, shipped:

  • OK, I need a replacement; one's good, one's bad. Mine right now are both 7514**** with the dimple. Should I expect the Danish one's pictured above, and currently available on ebay, to sound just fine? Or does that little dimple actually make a significant difference?

    Thanks,
    -Ken

    Well you must ask yourself
    1. Will they sound better than yours currently do ?
    2. Will they fit the hole with no modification ?
    3. Does they guy know how to ship them properly.

I really couldn't tell you. I just posted the pics because Peerless tweeters are interesting to me and I had never seen these ones before, and because they are made in Denmark. I also don't have a clue how they would compare performance-wise to the ones that you have. Impedance is 8Ohms. You could ask the seller.

I'm *inclined* to believe that the hole doesn't make any difference to the sound. Someone (I forget who atm) stated that the hole was to prevent issues due to pressure differentials that could damage the tweeter during air shipment. Sounds somewhat plausible.

4Ohm Peerless from a 1975 B&O speaker. Not sure if it's Danish or USA but I'd guess Danish because I think this is pre takeover of Peerless by US company in Boston. Looks like the # follows a different convention and the 75 probably refers to 1975 in this case.

Here's another one. This one's 8 Ohm nom. impedance. Sample Speaker (whatever that means) from Pioneer. Looks different from others I've seen so not absolutely sure that it is a Peerless. I think Cizek made similar tweeters. Also, I can't be sure that the dome is textile or silk......

  • Well here's one that is interesting in two ways. First, it has a 7514xxxx #, yet it also has a "Made in USA" sticker :p 2nd it has some rust like deposits on the dome surround which the seller is warning that it is indicative that the wiring inside is starting to "rust", as in the voice coils I guess he thinks :p (maybe leaking ferrofluid?) 3rd thing is that he says they are from a Model 7A with a date of 1983. Did they still make 7A's in 1983? I highly doubt it since my 7B's were 1979! Oops make that 3 ways.

What are the center to center measurements on those magnet screws?

The one Pioneer pic looks like it was powder-coated wrinkle or even rebuilt then wrinkle-painted.
Why not just rebuild what you've got? Seems like some of the various pics of the classic Peerless tweeters look like someone attempted poorly at a rebuild. Just my thoughts.

Voice coils are copper, they don't rust. No ferro-fluid.

  • It does not surprise me that there is no ferro-fluid. I've never heard that there was except for one member who told me recently that he looked it up but I don't know what his source was.

But the big question that remains unanswered is, why does it have a Made in USA sticker with a serial number that starts with 7514. Virtually everyone I have spoken to here said that indicated it was made in Denmark and that 3514 indicated made in USA. Now that is called into question.

That discoloration reminds my of the rubber woofer surround that gets that way. With the woofer original windex and it comes right off.

I agree that there's no way they are rust like the guy thinks they are. He's a straight shooter but someone's going to get these tweets awfully cheap. I think I'd try a q-tip with some of that windex and go really easy.

I don't want these because I already have 2 made in USA's 55140383 which should be 3rd week in 1983 whereas these are 43rd week in 1983, 75144383. I no longer believe that the 75 and 55 indicate the country of origin, although I will admit that I have never seen a 5514 that was dated earlier than 1980. We also have pole pieces that had ground flats and rounded edges with no center dimples on 7514 and 5514, at least with the early ones, like 1980 and earlier. In my limited exposure it appears that the early 7514's and 5514's have a DCR around 8.5, 8.6 Ohms and the later 5514's have around 7.0, 7.1 Ohms, so 1.5 Ohms difference. Whether or not that proves that they are voiced differently I do not know. In my listening experience they didn't sound identical at all.

PS: I'm going to ask this guy what the DC resistance of his tweets is.

This one's from a Cizek speaker and is 55145480 (54th week in 1980) and measures 7.7 Ohms DCR and has the flats ground on the pole piece but with the gold pockmarked or dimpled grid texture not seen on any Polk examples to my knowledge. Nominal 8 Ohms. I don't like the way the tweeter looks on the front. Looks like someone sprayed the whole thing with black paint :o I suppose it is possibly something deliberately done by or for Cizek to dampen the dome.

    Possible Time-aligned design?

  • Maybe that one is designed to have a diffuser aperture attached, which then is mounted to the speaker baffle. But I just noticed something is wrong in the 2 photos. The back view has sharp right angle corners and the front view has rounded ones. Also, it seems like the dimensions are different. Not to mention the shiny rear finish and satin black front finish.
