Underpowered?

I just purchased a pair of Polk S60 speakers and I’m powering them with a Yamaha RX-V575 and I can’t seem to get the bass that I heard at the store so I’m wondering if the receiver is underpowered.

How were they setup at the store and in what size room? How are they setup at your house and in what size room?

i.e. Corner loaded, packed in line with a bunch of other speakers at Best Buy, etc.

What were they playing at the store versus what you are playing and what is your source? (Vinyl, SACD, CD, MP3, network Audio, etc)

Have you set the receiver back to factory settings? Sometimes folks mess with them so much, they forgot what they have done. While Txcoastal1 is correct, let's see if we can make the best of what you have first.

Signal current input or setting issue

Do you have a bluray or DVD player in the house and a couple of CDs?

The AVR is rated at 80W with two channels driven. Okay for video in a small room, but might not have the grunt for music in a large room.

Well, you can go one of two routes. Either get a beefier AVR (Receiver) or augment what you currently have with a decent sub. Do you have a preference?

It's not my system. This is completely up to you.

With that said, if you feel that the mid frequencies (vocals) and upper frequencies (treble) are at a loud enough volume but the snare drums, doors slamming, and the upper spectrum of the lower octaves of the speakers need help? A new receiver may just do the job. Get a high current one. Don't pay so much attention to watts.

With that said, if you feel that the mid frequencies (vocals) and upper frequencies (treble) are at a loud enough volume but the aforementioned is good for you and you just want to "feel" a door slam, a kick drum, an organ or bass guitar? Then simply consider a good sub to help augment. I would not personally look for any other type of sub other than a servo sub, regardless of the brand.

What you really need is a receiver with preouts and a solid external amp, or maybe a really beefy avr. Depending on budget, I would recommend the former. @mrloren has experience with this...

In the OP case I'd reset the AVR to factory and start over the setup again.

What speaker wire is being used?

If the store was playing demo tracks and it was bass heavy that is because it was mixed that way. Try different sources, CD, DVD, Blu-Ray, FM Radio. A USB input is not going to have the greatest sound to it.

The S60 is a very good speaker I played mine for hours without a sub, they did sound good, add a sub and they sound better.

Yes to a better AVR, that Yamaha is an entry level AVR. A Marants, Devon AVR-X---
or the bigger Yamaha would work very well

Sub add a good sub in the mix, SVS or HSU. A sub will take the stress of the low end off the AVR.

AMP, I added a Emotive BASX-A300 and the signatures opened up nice. More power is always better than too little.

Get a good integrated amp or separates to get the best results for music. AVR's are for home theater.
