Fry's was synonymous with Silicon Valley "culture" when I was livin' & workin' there. Well, Fry's and Weird Stuff Warehouse.
There was a Fry's ca. three blocks from my lab on Titan Way in Sunnyvale -- walking distance (although, it being California in the late 1980s, most folks would drive... it was quicker to walk). Weird Stuff Warehouse was a little too far/tricky to walk to.

That's a fact.
My initial introduction to Fry's was the prior iteration Sunnyvale store on Kern Ave back in the late 80's. I'm pretty sure I discovered Weird Stuff and Halted during the same trip.
I remember when they opened Palo Alto store up El Camino Real. Later, I had an office across the street on Park and that Fry's was to closest place to get a sandwich. Always thought it was a unusual and difficult location to get in and out of but I'm sorry to hear it's closing.

They are supposedly moving to a consignment model with manufacturers and the empty shelves are due to the transition period...Living Room 2.2: Usher BE-718 "tiny dancers"; Dual DIY Dayton audio RSS210HF-4 Subs with Dayton SPA-250 amps; Arcam SA30; Musical Fidelity A308; Sony UBP-x1000es

I used to go to Frys for everything; gear, DVDs, etc. Now I never go to a store, and buy everything online. Except groceries. Still physically shop for that.
