Need some advice from anglers

So this summer we spent some time at a rental property on a large pond. My BIL brought his fishing pole and my wife took a real liking to this past time. Never caught anything but had some fun. I haven't cast a line since I was a kid so I'm really out of touch with what's available these days.

Mrs Bob's birthday is coming up and I never know what to get her, she will be surprised by a reel & pole I'm sure. What is suggested for a beginner? Don't want to get too crazy with the cost as it very well be just a whim that will quickly pass...but you never know.
Yep, my name really is Bob.
Parasound HCA1500A(indoor sound) and HCA1000(outdoor sound), Dynaco PAS4, Denon DP1200 w/Shure V15 Type V and Jico SAS stylus, Marantz UD7007, Polk L600, Rythmik L12 sub.

Well what was she using? Baitcaster, spinning or zebco like spincast?
    Help us help you.
I've used mostly baitcasters for the laat 45yrs. I do use some spinning for light gear.

I fish every chance I can. You can pick up a decent set up at Cabela's or any outfitter that has decent poles. I recently went into LLBeans in Freeport Maine & talked with them about fly fish poles & was surprised that a decent pole is about 100-150.00 & even if I was to advance, pfz0j3ssezar.jpg
that pole would still be a great pole to use even if I upgraded. I see Walmart has poles for 40-80.00 & LLBeans_Cabela's 80-100.00 on up, for a decent pole that is way better than a department store set up. Fish dont care what you use for a pole. But if it does what you want-thats the one you want. I have 30+ poles I pick up at yard sales & when they are discounted. I have 3-4 Ugly Sticks & honestly I've had better from Goodwill set up for 4.00. I tend to like a flexible pole that cast nice. I've caught some 8-9lbs bass right on the shore line in Sept/Oct. I enjoy fishing

That's some good pointers there. Open reel. Closed reels. So many options. That is why I like places that know what their talking about. It can save you time & money in the long run & give you some good tips to help you.... I went to LLBeans & found out I was doing something wrong with my casting technique & I didnt believe him till I tried it his way. He was correct & now I have more control of my cast.

She will want something very easy to use, think pocket fisherman :) I don't want to go that cheap just in case she really does take to this past time since she is now retired,
doubt she will ever become a regular at this, probably more like just a few times/year.

Zebco 33 and a decent 1 piece graphite rod. Hard to go wrong

That looks very much like the reel I had as a kid. I think we have a winner here!

If you want to get her to cast better, then get her a bobber the size of a Home Depot bucket. After she’s wrapped her head with it a couple of times, she’ll change her ways... ;)
Where’s the KABOOM?!?! There’s supposed to be an Earth shattering KABOOM!!!

Start her with a Zebco 33 real and an ugly stick rod. Great set up and bombproof. Less hassle for you. If she really digs it like you think she might ,then upgrade to either open face reel or bait caster reel. Sounds like you two are in for some great new adventures! Good luck. D

I like how Ugly Stix have a warrantee. I have 3-4 different models including brook trout rod/reel & they are made well. Stiff not very flexible IMO. Price is good with warrentee I guess. Perfect for beginner or trolling set up
