Agree on the Puffin ^^^ but a used Dynavector P75 will also serve you well, and is within your budget."This may not matter to you, but it does to me for various reasons, many of them illogical or irrational, but the vinyl hobby is not really logical or rational..." - member on Vinyl Engine

Been very happy with the MoFi StudioPhono.

A demo of a slightly tarted up version of the Lounge Audio LCR phono preamp here was pretty favorable. I liked the sound, and the price of the stock (base) version is pretty good (less than 400 smackers), if memory serves.

I will offer one itty-bitty piece of unsolicited advice. When it comes to hifi (heck, most things) -- I am cheap. Really, incredibly cheap. But... I spent considerably more than 300 Samoleums on my phono preamp. One does tend to get what one pays for.

I've been very pleased with my Vista Audio Phono 2.

Doc Hardy beat me to it. A Lounge LCR is well within your budget (you might find one for around $200 - $250 used with a little patience). I'm very pleased with mine.
