Hickock 6000 tube tester cleanup

I'm not sure if you've seen pictures of the Hickock 6000 tube tester but they all have that red cloth like cover on them. The glue on mine was coming off and the red cloth was beginning to peel so I dismantled it.

While poking around in it and trying to figure out what the paper wrapped capacitor was it and the red wire came lose from the meter.

A couple of minutes on the web found that I could replace it with a 47uf 16v to 50v cap. Done!

Red stuff was removed, the glue was sanded off and rather than pretty it up I just coated it with a couple of layers of poly. I reglued the top and a couple of the corners.

And it still works!!

NO!! Mine...ALL mine!!! :) It has provided many hours of "entertainment". And weeded out what should have been or were advertised as "strong" tubes but proved to be not so strong after all.

IMO (and FWIW), calibration is everything with a Hickok. Not that they're unreliable (they're well designed and well built) but, sans calibration, the numbers they yield are just numbers. When they're properly calibrated, the Hickoks yield numbers that you can take to the bank.

    :)
