Was looking at possibly picking up a JBL BP600.1 which is rated at 300 W RMS. Only thing is I'm only going to be powering one MOMO 8" sub with it and I'm a little worried about blowing the speaker (it is rated for 200 W RMS). I know I can turn down the gain but how do you know what too much power is?

Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'm new to this.

TIA

    The JBL does 600w@1or2ohms......300w@4ohms

Is your sub single voice coil?

If its a DVC you could get a 300.1 and the 300w will be fine on the sub, just turn the gian down.

    SVC 4OHM.

I know I can turn it down, but how do I know how high I can turn it up?

With only the one 8" sub (stealth console enclosure, in a jeep wrangler) I want to try and get the most out of it without (of course) blowing it out. How do you know where the line is?

Do you just turn it up until it starts to distort?

Oh, BTW I'm looking at that amp because I have credit at a local store and it is the only amp they have that fits the bill :(

Otherwise I have to drop down to a 150 W RMS amp.

what i did was turn my radio to 35(out of 40) with the gain all the way down
then turn the gain until it distorts, then turn it down a little
that sub will probably almost be able to handle 300 watts RMS

actually its not too bad to have the extra headroom... as long as you arent too volume-happy and know when to turn it down (when you hear distortion, duh!), you should have no problem with that set-up.
