Going to see Troy tomorrow, I'll post a review then. I think it looks great, but the reviews are mixed, which usually means it could go either way. Sometimes I don't put too much stock in reviews, but usually when every major critic likes it, it's phenomenal. I was hoping to see that with this film, but no such luck. So many critics are so academic, that they they simply won't like a condensed version of a classic. One reason Entertainment Weekly didn't like it was because the writer threw out the involvement of the Gods. Really, though, does anyone really believe that 2004 would welcome an updated Clash of the Titans, or rather a film that focuses on human destiny controlled by humans? I'm still looking forward to it, and I think it will still be good, if not great.

Ok, so unless you're expecting to see Homer's work perfectly realized on screen, this was a decent film. It had some truly exceptional moments, most of which involved Eric Bana and/or Peter O'Toole. Brian Cox is always fun to watch, but his character becomes almost obsolete towards the end of the film, despite his continued presence. The scene where Priam meets with Achilles is riveting, because O'Toole is just such a great actor.

The vistas are wonderful, the actual city of Troy is amazingly realized. The acting across the board is good to great, and overall it is worth seeing. The film is obviously a deviation from poem, but then how could such a work really be made into a film as is?

Some of the lines that seem cheesy on the ads aren't so cheesy in the context of their scene, and overall I enjoyed it. I've seen a lot of reviews asserting that the audience is made to be neutral, that the film does not really favor one side or allow the audience to root for either Greece or Troy. I totally disagree with this. I think the Trojans are made to be more human, more compassionate and generally more sympathetic. However, it is their destiny to lose, which makes it all the more tragic.

I think my only complaint is that for much of the earlier part of the film, this sympathy is lost on the audience, for the story gets going so fast, and then spends most of the time chronicling the batte. I would have liked a bit mor time getting to know the characters, because it took me awhile to get emotionally invested. Not a bad way to kill 3 hours on a Saturday.
