if I buy a DVD player with this feature, do I need to upgrade
my Denon pro-logic receiver to a Digital one?

I have posted a few messages over the last few months, as I am upgrading my whole system. With the purchase of polk satellite systems speakers, I was wondering about the above feature as I prepare to buy a DVD player. I was set on buying a new receiver, but if the DVD player can do the job, I will save the money.

the dvd cannot relay the DD signal to the speakers through a non-DD reciever. the dvd player can be non-DD, but the receiver must be to get DD sound to your speakers...

...does your Denon have multi-ch, or 5.1 inputs? ie, is it digital-ready?

I am showing my ignorance here, but I am learning.
I have had my Denon for about 6 years. It is a 5 channel
Dolby Pro-logic receiver. I am not sure if it is 5.1...as I am still
learning exactly what that is. I bought the Denon AVR-900 as an entry level receiver for surround sound, however I got married after I bought the thing and now 6 years later and 3 moves I am getting back into this and want to complete something I started way back then.

So, with the age and the fact that I know it says 5 channel on the front of the panel, is it safe to assume that it is not 5.1?

...it is a prologic 5 channel rec. No 5.1 inputs to make it digital ready.

So you will need to look at upgrading to make use of 5.1 or greater sound formats such as DD and DTS. Just remember, you only need the processor(s) in one location, the rec, or the dvd player.

Great deals on Denon and Marantz dd/dts receivers online right now, I can't beleive some of the prices for what you get.
