Philips 963SA Needs Repair

Well I finally decided to send it to the shop. Just a brief synopsis:
I purchased it in November from J&R Music. First thing I noticed was the color of some DVD's was way off. Pictures were blue like it was only showing one color. I wasn't as concerned as I should have been because I use my Pioneer DVD47Ai for movies. The philips was mainly for music because of the upsampling capabilities. Then after about a month it started having logic problems. ie front panel buttons would not operate unless I used the remote to turn it on first, then the player would skip to the selections it wanted to play etc. I called Philips was told to reset the unit ,which I did, and I found that the problem would not occur if I left the unit on. So it stayed on. Then lately I noticed it would start to play by it's self. I'd press stop on the remote it would, then, when I'd come back later it would be playing. So I took the CD out turned the player off. It turned it's self back on. So I figure I had better send it in for repairs before it completely takes over starts ordering up roomservice and sh--. It's still under warranty so we'll see how Philips stands behind it's products. Anybody else have any problems, or comments ? I'll keep you posted! It's due to ship tomorrow...

    963SA Repair Update:

Shipped the unit to Philips Repair Depot in Knoxville, TN as per instructions from Philips customer service dept. Tried to call to find out the status and was told the unit would be repaired and returned to me when completed.

Then on 5/24/ 04 I received a letter from Philips stating" The Philips Factory Service Centers are ending repair operations, and the work that is currently being done is being reallocated to the Philips Authorized Service network. Therefore my DVD player was being shipped to St Louis, MO."

So my DVD player has gone from Atlanta, to Knoxville,to St Louis. It's been on a road trip for two weeks, and I have no idea when I'll get it back.

sorry to hear your misfortune with the Philips. I have a SACD1000 that stop working back in August, and I took the chance of sending it to a modder (voiding the warranty, which is 2 years). It was fixed and modded, and work like a charm to this day (knock on wood). There has been a lot of speculation around Philips pulling out from the US market, don't have details, but it could be real (as you experienced). Good luck!
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I'm afraid this seems the start of something bad. I liked the player the upsampling really added some detail to stock CD's Hope they can fix it, and that I get it back soon...
