As far as safer goes in the respect you speak of it I might tend to agree. Howeve, this is not the area I'm personally that concerned about. I'm concerned about internet attacks which is why I'd recommend a router for anyone with a broadband connection whether that be via Cable or DSL or Satellite for that matter.
As far as speed goes, I've heard that argument, but I can get the same download speeds of 8mb/sec and upload speeds of 1mb/sec every time I ask for it. So either everyone else in my neighborhood is always sitting on their hands or the argument doesn't hold water. -

8meg down/1mb up. Yes you won cable is capable of doing this. I say just you're "Lucky" not all will get this speed, just something to think about. DSL speed is pretty much guaranteed whatever they sold you it should do, cable is pretty much has variable speed.

Feel free to visit the site I mentioned above ... Although there is some sporadic lower rates in different geographical areas from time to time you'll find that by and large everyone in the network gets the same speeds and you'll find these are among the highest reported nation wide. It was like that years ago, it's like that today.
PS In addition until recently this was for $29.95 / month. It's now more expensive but still well worth it. -
Ok, I check out that site.
BellSouth was rated Smooth Ride, nice to hear.
Sorry he had some trouble with his line, he called tech support he didn't find his answer. Recalled at night found his trouble, he now a happy camper.
I'm not a tech support person so don't beat me up.Originally posted by PolkWannabie

ZA is fine for the short run since it can be downloaded and it's fine imho as an adjunt to a router. The idea is to have some protection ASAP and better protection later.
-
Maybe I run double protection then.
Have a router / right now listen to music 2 channel (my favorite) working on my laptop now by wireless LAN using Wireless Encryption. Laptop runs ZA, my desktop hardwired LAN is running ZAPro.

I know a few friends who have software firewalls running in Windows, like ZoneAlarm. I wouldn't recommend them to anyone. Get a router or a Linux server to do the job.

Just a couple of questions. I'm no computer tech so bear wih me.
In MY experience, my cable was faster at certain times of the day but my DSL is more consistent and faster at peak usage times such as early evening. I've also known people who shared a node for their cable modem with a public library. It was very congested during library hours but great at night.
Now to my questions:
1) Here in Canada we're now at something like 70 - 85% high speed internet last I heard. Is it true that the U.S. is lagging in this? My numbers might be wrong but it sure doesn't seem like it. I only know one person NOT on highspeed.
2) How much difference does the distance from the node( or whatever its called) make for DSL. I've heard its huge or that it makes very little difference.
Thanx
Nathan

At least in my experience you can't even *get* DSL unless you are close enough to a CO so that is a huge difference in my opinion. I also remember that the further away from the CO you are that the slower your connection is. This was a couple years ago though so things might have changed. I was "too far away" from a CO back then so I got cable modem and never looked back.
I sure do miss the ethernet connection from my days in school though. MAN was that fast!!! -
ZA does take up resources as it runs in the background like any other program does. A router with hard firewall is better.
If you decide against running ZA after you have tried it, make sure you do the uninstall per their precise instructions. I had to reformat 3 computers drives when I took ZA off the wrong way. It stopped all web activity dead and since the core of the program was gone, I had no control over what it did. I lost 500 mp3s on one computer.
Do put DRtcp or adjust you receive window size on your computer when going with broadband since most are set up with small receive windows that limit your download packet size.
When I went with dsl a couple of years ago, this tweak helped move me from 384 to 1.3mb on my dsl connection. SWBell used to sell you this tweak as a program and charge you an extra 20 bucks a month for a premium package when all it did was open up the receive window size.HT Optoma HD25 LV on 80" DIY Screen, Anthem MRX 300 Receiver, Pioneer Elite BDP 51FD Polk CS350LS, Polk SDA1C, Polk FX300, Polk RT55, Dual EBS Adire Shiva 320watt tuned to 17hz, ICs-DIY Twisted Prs, Speaker-Raymond Cable

It's available as a freebie at the site I posted above ... Additionally there's an online tweaktester there that will make recommendations on settings to use based on remote interaction with your p/c.

I think the best online computer analyser that I have found is at Pcpitstop I have used it to find out alot about what my computer was doing "behind my back" that slows it down and can compare my performance to others in the same class.HT Optoma HD25 LV on 80" DIY Screen, Anthem MRX 300 Receiver, Pioneer Elite BDP 51FD Polk CS350LS, Polk SDA1C, Polk FX300, Polk RT55, Dual EBS Adire Shiva 320watt tuned to 17hz, ICs-DIY Twisted Prs, Speaker-Raymond Cable
