SPR remains the definitive modern war movie for me. BOB isn't quite a movie, but if it were - it would equal or top SPR.

WWS and BHD are very good, but lack the emotional connection SPR and BOB delivers. WWS tries, but bogs down in some cheesy sappiness at times, detracting from the emotional impact.

At the risk of getting scorched, U-571 is an EXCELLENT war movie. Story, pacing, editing, acting, tension, special fx, soundtrack - it's all there in spades. Das Boot is a superior movie in certain respects, but not in others.

Ditto on U-571. An underrated movie. I thought it was great. SQ is exceptional. Plus, it didn't have the gory, bloody and gruesome scenes typical in war movies. Some people enjoy that kind of stuff, but for me it doesn't qualify as entertainment.

BHD on Superbit will be awesome. Very good movie because of its political significance (a commentary on the concept of military use of force where no one really wins). Well produced and directed.

SPR - good, very good, my second favorite. But, a bit too drawn out and too emotional to warrent often rewatches. Plus Hanks, it's too difficult to get past his Hollywood image and get lost in his character. This used to be a great demo disk, but many have come and taken it's place. Heck, even the HBO mini-series BOB is better then SPR. I will say the M1 Garand action is this movie awesome.

BHD - My current favorite. Great action, some emotion, decent characters, great acting by all and no giant Hollywood characters to distract from the film. A much more realistic war movie over SPR.

WWS - couldn't stand this one, the cheese factor is too high and Mel is nothing but a major distraction that just ruins the film. A no-name actor in his place would have helped this film greatly. This was one of the very few blind DVDs I sold after one viewing.

U-571 - One of the better sub movies out. Enjoyable with a decent re-watch factor attached. Like Ed said, it's got a lot going for it in terms of story, action and such. Good acting by all as well.

I think Das Boot is the best sub movie made to date. Can't beat the realism plus the claustrophobic feeling you get when you watch it. Great story.

i think all four of these movies are equally good. some slightly better than others.. but all are yards above your typical war movie.. if there is such a thing.

I like BHD then SPR, and WWS, BOB. But once i watch one of these.. then that one then becomes my favorite one. there are all so good. Nothing wrong with U-571 either. great movie.

I just watched WWS for the first time last week.. and i have to say.. it was better than i thought it would be. I thought Mel did a quality job. He's a good actor in my book. ala Signs

But then again.. i think Pearl Harbor was good too. :p

I am a BHD fan. I will add the SuperBit to my 3 disk edition. To fully appreciate BHD you should read the book. The movie was very good, the book is much better.

Another book to read that will make you appreciate SPR is Stephen Ambose "D Day." An excellent book. Once you read the book you can see where SPR lifted real events for the script.
