Any tips on buying a new Honda

Options
I am in the market for a new minivan for my wife. We've looked at new and used and have been narrowing in on new 2019 Honda Odysseys. The local dealers have alot of them in stock. It's been 10 years since we purchased a brand new car, and I've never purchased a brand new Honda. Seems like every time I buy a car the industry trends have changed. So...any specific advice on how to come to agreement on a great price? I've already dealt with an internet sales specialist and been in to meet her and drive one. She's given me one price quote already, which is discounted from MSPR but I think there's probably room to get it lower. Hit me with some suggestions!

Just keep getting online/phone quotes from all the dealers in the area. Keep pushing them for a better deal. It's easier to play hardball when you haven't invested any real time. Also harder for them to play salesman games when you're not face to face. Every new car I've bought in the last 20 years has been done on the phone or via the internet. I haven't stepped into the showroom until I'm ready to sign. And buy as close to the last day of the month as possible.

We purchased a Honda Pilot, made an offer 1K over dealer invoice. Waited for one to come in and paid cash. Never use MSRP. Finding dealers cost is simple. Hope this helps.

What's the easiest way for me to get an accurate invoice amount for the cars I am interested in?

A quick google search yields the below values, but her first price quote is already lower than this invoice number.

If it’s quoted below invoice, getting below that may or may not be worth the effort. Invoice is interesting and definitely good to know, but does not mean that’s anywhere near real dealer cost. MSRP is also grossly inflated these days because dealers know people know they can and should get a discount. I’d take below invoice on one and be ok with it as long as it was exactly what I wanted.

Generally speaking, shoot for 10 to 12 percent off MSRP on a model the dealer has on the lot in abundance. Watch out for dealer add ons in the finance office like paint protection, extended warranties, pinstriping, glass etching, and any number of a hundred things dealers have dreamt up over the years. That’s really where they aim for pure profit. That, and low balling on any trade in. Work the deal for the new vehicle before talking about a trade.

There is also something called “holdback” which is what the dealer pays the manufacturer for advertising. If the vehicle gas been on the lot for less than 45 to 90 days, depending on the manufacturer, the dealer gets the holdback money. It varies, but so,Stimson that money may be an additional 1000.00 the dealer gets knocked off the invoice price.

That "Invoice" price is not the real dealer cost. There are often other kickbacks, quota/volume bonuses, etc. I don't know how much pricing has changed over the last few years, but my wife and I bought a 2014 Odyssey EX-L for $30k even (plus TTT fees). We waited until late December (23rd) and bought one of the last 2014 models around.

End of the year puts a lot of pressure on the dealers to move inventory. You may not want to wait until December, but I'd wait until the end of a month at least and possibly wait until you start seeing large numbers of 2020 models on the lot.

FWIW, just bought my wife a 2019 Maxima.

Looked at a lot of cars for about 2 weeks.

I had a number in mind I wanted to spend and stuck with it.

A friend of mine who is retired used to sell cars, he told me a fair estimate is about .88 X the invoice price.

He stated this is NOT an absolute as all vehicles/dealers have so many different variables to their pricing.

I didn't finance, didn't say anything about a trade in, just negotiated the "off the lot" price to start.

Once the trade came up, the dealer showed me a KBB value report that said $1787.00 for my trade "2002 Infinity Q45", they offered me $1500.0 for it.

That didn't work for me, I stuck to my number, they made some calls "to whom I have no idea" and came back with a $4,000.00 quote for the trade.

Got my number, took the deal.

Good luck and have fun.....it's crazy out there :D

I did my last 2 car deals entirely by phone and internet. 2017 GTi new and recently bought a 2017 Ford Escape used for my GF. Good dealers/sales people know the information we have available at our finger tips and a good salesperson will realize that. I also told both dealers I didn't want any BS or game playing. I was ready to buy.

We got great deals on both cars but I also spent months researching, watching pricing, etc. We were also both in a position where we didn't NEED a car, both had perfectly running cars. That enables you to walk away if you smell something amiss.

P.s. I also ended up buying both out of town because of the crappy dealers we seem to have around here.

We also looked out of town. Wound up going 65 miles east and bought a used CR-V for $2k less than what I could do in our backyard.

Not sure if this pertains to the van you are looking at but we went used(low mileage 2014) due to problems Honda has had with their direct injection system(2015+).

Yeah, I would love to wait a little longer, but the Chrysler minivan that this would be replacing has transmission issues. I have it at a shop today hoping that the fix is minor. If it is, I might be able to fix it and then wait until the end of the month. But if the transmission is shot then we need to buy a new van within a week.

Good stuff...I am trying to come up with "my number." I want to be aggressive but not unrealistic.

I’m going to take our old van up to the closest Honda dealership for a detailed appraisal. Hoping that goes well and we can get some progress made on negotiations.

I bought a certified pre-owned 2014 CRV a couple years ago. I expect to drive it 150,000 or 10 years whichever comes first. I also perfered the 2.4L engine and the none CVT trans.

Other; M10 series II, M7C's, Hafler XL600 amp, RB-980BX, Parasound HCA-1500 amp , P5 preamp, all in storage. All vintage Polk have had crossover rebuilds and tweeter upgrades.

Probably good for (at least) 300k miles in toto, as I am sure you know :)

The Honda dealer where Mrs. H bought her CR-V had a 'wall of fame' with photos of customers and their over 200k Hondas. Quite a few photos on the wall -- and northern New England is a rough environment for automobiles.

Our 14 CR-V is basically the wife's vehicle. I don't expect her to put more than 5k/yr on it(currently has 40k) while we keep running the 12 Cruze as the daily driver. It has 120k on it and hopefully gets us well over 200k. I think it actually has a better ride than the Honda and it does get about 10mpg more on the highway.
So the Honda should last a long time as long as the frame/body don't rust out on us.
