    Altecs and SETs are beguiling.

Those horn-loaded tweeters failed to show repentance.

more than a few are repugnant...

Now THAT is my kind of word! :p

^^^ Those don't look like Klipsch Heresys!

    ;)

(when I think of repugnant horns, I think of Heritage Klipsch)

Oh, to stay on topic -- one of the horriblest ;) cacophonies I've ever heard was a pair of 1974 Klipsch Cornwalls driven by a Mac C-28 and MC-2100. Talk about something that'd send one running from the room, hands over ears...

I do not care for the sound of ss Mac amplifiers or preamps.

I say all of this as a McIntosh owner (three pieces, one in regular use) -- draw your own conclusions ;)

I don't get this??? I'm scratching my head wondering why you would keep any audio gear that you do not like and especially given the exceptionally high resale value of Mcintosh? Why not sell it and use the proceeds to buy the gear that you do like?

FWIW I've had many pieces of Mcintosh come and go here that I did not like either. My list includes the 1st generation (7000) cd player and their 1st generation ss amps and pre's which I found to be harsh sounding. I didn't care for their pre-tuners neither ss (mx113) or tubed (mx110) and thought they were both poor performers. Roger Russell's ML1C's and XR5's didn't last here and neither did a Dewicked MR78 tuner. But all those pieces sold quickly and for a decent profit which in turn bought the stuff I do like.

It's actually very simple: That is exactly why I keep the ss components. Folks pay silly money for MC-2100s and C-28s; I'd rather sell them if the goin' gets tough than, say, a kidney.

I have the gear I do like.

Gotcha; I can understand your reasoning and there's 2 schools of thought here. In my case I looked at my vintage Mac gear collection as a liability as it will fail eventually and I'd have to pay someone to have it fixed for resale. So I sold the less desirable pieces while the selling is good.
But I do wish I'd held onto my vintage Sansui collection a bit longer though as their prices have really taken off into the stratosphere over the past couple years.

Lord knows I’m in arrears when reviewing my newly acquired gear. I’m still acquiring my audio vernacular, other than it sounds great! Or, I love it! Newbies, I tell ya! :)

Wait let me get this correct...

You've designed rockets, jet engines and automobiles yet you cannot design words on paper?
What kind of one trick pony are you?

Lol! Lucky for me, I have my trusted Stereophile Audio Glossary!

So, the only excuse that I really have, in full confession, is that I'm, well, a bit lazy! :)

If only Mc would release a new tubed DAC-less preamp I would consider replacing my C2300, But, until then I will stay with my blue-eyed classic. I use it with a SS Mc MC452; tubed pre with a SS amp is the perfect mix for me.

Yeah? I mean, what's wrong with having a Mac DAC?

Nothing but I don't need it in my Preamp in my analogue system. I have a Mc DAC built-in to my MA8900. They state these DACs are upgradable but nothing has been posted about new modules available even though the DACs have been improved.
