My new fridge is an 88' GE I bought new. Still works great. My old garage fridge is a 50's GE. Washer and driers were always Kenmore but I just replace my washer with a new Maytag which I believe is pretty much the same as the Kenmore. The old non-frost free fridges used very little electricity.

Your the perfect example of why they created built in obsolesce. Keeping an appliance for 30+ years.....they'd go broke, and many did in fact.

You can always pay $75/ month to get a homeowners warranty/insurance policy on your appliances... It's like building an accrual to pay to fix replace your appliances.

I'd only carry that insurance if I had seriously expensive appliances Mikey. In a year's time, that same $75 a month totals to $900 in a savings account. That's what we do. With most warranties you'd be better off just putting the money in a savings account. If you have some seriously expensive stuff with lcd panels on your fridge and all that then you either need to be able to afford the repairs, put some money aside or take out insurance. I don't need a fridge with a computer built in with ice and water on the door. Too much to have a problem with.

As a Realtor I deal with home warranties all the time. I add them to any house I list and make sure my buyer's get one as well, whether I get the seller to pay for it or I do. If you're spending $75mo you're doing it wrong. For $500 or less per year you can get a warranty that not only covers the appliances but the major systems of the home (furnace, water heater, plumbing, electrical, etc). Just my .02 worth...

Ken, isn't that 500 bucks a year based on how old the appliances/house are to begin with ? Can't see paying that on a house that's 25 years old with original everything. The insurance company would lose their shirt.HT SYSTEM-

Speed Queen...
Simple and durable, not sure about today’s models...
I've been moving a Speed Queen set around for the last 5 years for my project houses and apartments for employees to use. I bought the set with no computer boards just the basic relay circuit based knobs and switches. Haven't had any problems, but if I do it will be a simple part swap out that we can do ourselves. There are good and bad aspects of these warranties. On more than one occasion, I’ve spent many hours for customers arguing with their warranty companies. Everything from the tech that they sent out incorrectly diagnosing the problem, that I had already diagnosed, to convincing them that the same named part exists in bot the indoor and out door heat pump does in fact exist.
Most will allow one repair on a major appliance, or in the case of AC’s each major component. There are also instances of warranties not covering the cost of full repair pricing. They want the home owner to pay a few hundred dollars towards the repair.
Not saying these are bad investments for many people, but if you decide to get one, spend a weekend reading the very fine print.
