Seems reasonable to me. When their enrollment and athletic expenditures far outpace the rest of the conference it's time for them to step up to the next level. My question would be why they wouldn't want to step up to the next kevel.

Although interesting, it's not unusual for a college sports team to move to a more competitive conference. Probably could be added to the Division II Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference to have more comparable competitors. And that helps justify a substantial budget. One of that conference's teams is stepping up to Division I at the same time.

Frankly, I did not know there were that many small colleges with football programs in Minnesota.

why is this a surprise, and why wouldn't they want to do this? If they are that committed to athletics, they could work their way up to D1 and actually make some revenue. SMU, TCU, Baylor, Liberty, lots of smaller, private religious schools play at the D1 level, some even in power 5 conferences.
