Ever since embarking upon this journey, which has been a blast I may say, I've been looking for pieces that ordinarily (aka new) would be out of my threshold for willingness to pay. You know what I mean, esoteric, highly acclaimed, but way expensive! I'm not exactly a cheapskate, but just love a good bargain.
Well, a few weeks ago I just happened to stumble upon this beauty. EAR Acute III CD Player!
I love my EAR 834L pre, another great deal, and thought wow, wouldn't it be nice if I could get an accompanying piece. Yeah right. Not what I'm willing to pay at this point. So I look. Keep looking, patiently, and eventually, BOOM! Here she is:
This thing is a beast! Like the 834L, it's got a hefty 1/4" thick chrome plated faceplate.
All part of my office rig makeover. I have to chuckle a bit when I look back, and first joined CP, my office rig consisted of iTunes, computer audio card, and Logitech speakers!
Of course more to come, but I just had to plug this baby in! Rocking it now!

So this is day 2 with this exquisite little piece, and I'm amazed. Playing mainly electronic music thus far, but I immediately noticed the bass was extended, and tighter.
Admittedly, still hooked up to the Marantz AMP-1, via analog outputs from the EAR, but I had to immediately return the bass setting back to 0db (yes I had it at +2db, for shame!) but not necessary anymore to my taste. Nice tight bass, and extended.
The clarity and detail is a measured improvement over the Marantz CD-1. At lower listening levels, I can pick out things never really noticed before.
Even the soundstage is extended. At the same sitting position, the soundstage appears right next to my ears! Height is increased as well. I'm surrounded!
Yeah I'm a newbie when it comes to articulating my thoughts, but in a word, the improvements are profound! Another word that comes to mind is Incredible!
Can't wait to hook up the 834L pre!

I believe I could hear music if I just stared at it.
The chrome face plate is "1950's car bumper reminiscing".

The stock tubes are 7DJ8's (not sure what brand). Gotta get my read on if I ever decide to roll em (of course I will) someday! So an interesting development happened yesterday. I was doing some more research on this baby, and it turns out this piece is not a version 3! Oh no! What to do? The seller claimed it was a version 3. Drama? Here we go!
The biggest telltale was the lack of a USB input on the back of the unit. Version 3 introduced that feature, while the original, and version 2 did not.
I reached out to EAR, with the serial number, and they confirmed it was a version 1.
So in the meantime I've fallen in love with it, as it is still is a huge leap over what I have in the office, let alone when compared to all my spinners in the house.
So I reached out to the seller, he claims he was told from whom he bought it, that it was a version 3. I assume he was just as happy as I am, while he owned it, blissfully rocking the EAR, not really knowing, or caring, cause this baby just sounds great.
Ya know ignorance is truly bliss! Of course that is an assumption. He also claims he too reached out to EAR, after I contacted him, and got the same feedback. I wonder what the folks at EAR were thinking when 2 different requests came in regarding the same unit!
Well, I'm happy to report that after we chatted, and talked live, we were able to strike a deal. He refunded 25% of my purchase price, of which at the time I thought was already a great deal! Even for a version 1!
So I'm gonna keep it, I'm happy, and absolutely loving it.
And, in true keeping with the audio community, the seller made things right for me.
In the meantime, I found this review by the renowned Robert H Levi! Back in the day, when first introduced, this baby really punched way above it's retail price! And, it affirms some of my initial impressions!

It sounds pretty good too and it looks much better in person than it does in a photo. There is a whole lotta tubes in that unit! I forget the exact amount but it's a lot.
