A friend is inheriting a pair of SDA 2 (?A). Is the Crown common ground?

According to the schematic it is. If you have a multi meter you can confirm. You should see only a fraction of an ohm across the amps negative speaker terminals.

Thank you. Is this done with the amp plugged in AND turned on? Do I check at the external terminals?

No, unplugged. Yes, the negative binding posts.

Pro amps are not the best choice for home audio.
