This nanny-State bullchit needs to end. Legalize it ALL - marijuana, cocaine, heroin, meth, etc... the government should have ZERO say in what someone puts in their own body. As long as you pay for it yourself, and do not infringe on anyone else’s rights when you partake, knock yourself out.
Are you that much in denial about the dangers of operating under the influence?
It's not you that I care about, it's the innocent person that you kill while you are high as a kite. And nine times out of ten, the killer walks away with barely a scratch, but someone else who was just going along ends up in a casket. You infringed on an innocent persons right to life with your abuse to your body and they paid the price for it.
It's about the innocent person who gets killed for their money so you can buy your next fix.
If you want to kill yourself go right ahead, but you DON'T have the right to take anyone else with you!
Dang Cathy how you read all that into his comment???? Do we not have that now with alcohol? Yes yes we do. Do we have that now with talking and texting undrugged? Yes. Do we have too many now drowsy driving? Yes. Do we have that now with illegal drugs? YES YES WE DO. -
John, just show me a link of one death from a direct result of marijuana. Yes, some may die of lung cancer but was it hereditary? Was it because they also smoked cigarettes for 40 years but failed a drug test at the ripe old age of 75? Was it because they worked in a coal mine?
I'm not saying that it may not be a "contributing factor" to lung disease. If you go back and re-read my post, I referred to the "smoker" as taking one puff and dying. I think some of you instantly thought I was referring to habitual, hourly, daily, or more consistent/constant smoking for decades.
My point was that marijuana will not allow one to take a puff and see the floor of your home turn into glass overlooking the clouds while watching a 747 fly through the clouds below you.
Marijuana and the other drugs I mentioned are on 2 totally different atmospheres of euphoria/human reaction/dangers.

No, not in denial at all. For the record, I have never used any kind of recreational drug. I’ve done my share of drinking, but no drugs. I only say this to make the point that my views on legalization of drugs (100% libertarian) are not held out of personal interest for future acquisition of said substances.
Look, the people that want to do these drugs (all of them, not just pot) are already doing them - just about every study done indicates that legalization will lead to little, if any increase in usage. And they are already doing them while driving. And yes, I care about innocent people becoming victims on the roadway, and I do not appreciate your implication to the contrary. But as I said, there is no data to suggest that legalization will not change the frequency of DUI incidents. Further, if that really is your concern with legalization, then we need to make alcohol illegal immediately.
What WOULD happen with legalization (backed by numerous studies) are the following:
1. A cut in the prison population of about 50%. Prisons are basically grad school for petty drug offenders - they go in for using, growing, selling, etc drugs, and come out hardened criminals that have a prison record around their neck like an albatross, thereby drastically limiting their future employment opportunities. This is madness.
2. Free up the police and courts to prevent and prosecute REAL crimes against people and property. The relieving of the load on law enforcement and the judiciary by legalizing drugs would be astounding.
3. A marked decrease in infection, overdose and crime, as the price of drugs drop, and the availability increases. Moving this activity “out of the shadows” would be a huge step forward.
4. Eliminate the power of the drug cartels, and their vicious distribution networks.
The is more, of course, and a framework for the logistics of legalization would need to be implemented, but for the love of Pete - it’s time to end this madness, and let people do what they will - because they’re already doing it.

I could go on and on... and you can find stuff going on and on to support every position under the sun regarding weed. Personally, if you are in the privacy of your own home and it does not in any way impact the lives of others, including those in your home, I could care less what anyone does. The problem is there are variants of weed that will make you believe you are Superman, others make you think you are a frikken vampire. There are no regulations in place to control what other chemicals are mixed in the blend you smoke...

I think better education about drugs and alcohol are needed starting in first grade and continuing throughout the school years. Banning alcohol commercials like they did with tobacco wouldn't hurt either.

When I used the much less potent stuff in the 80's it was more of a peer pressure thing I guess. I just remember having the giggles for about 10 minutes and munchies after that eating a half a stick of butter cause nothing else was in the fridge. After the munchies it was a dive into a deep depression and then just sleep. I soon figured out this crap wasn't for me. The ultimate high for me now is being on a boat in the middle of the Caribbean like I did last year!

@Dabutcher , if your brother is talking suicide it's probably because of all the pharmaceuticals he's on. I have chronic pain from falling 14' off a crane we were building in '06 and landed on the pavement. Broke my back and damaged my sacro- illiac (hip). I take Kratom for the pain. No negative side effects like opioids and works just as well. Stupid medical community can kiss my a$$
As for weed, I agree with Jesse. It makes you stupid, lazy, worthless and paranoid. I like being smart. I only smoke it when I'm trying to dumb myself down enough to understand regular users...

In rereading my last post, I failed to tie my views in to the OP’s topic sufficiently.
My point is, and specifically for your brother, that people should be free to medicate themselves in whatever manner best helps them cope with their pain. Only your brother knows his pain level, and only he knows what combination/frequency of medicine makes him feel the least amount of pain. If he finds a combination that provides him the best possible quality of life, then he should be free to pursue it.

I'm all for the legalization for marijuana and believe it has great medicinal power. I also believe that everything in this country is ruled by money. When the big pharma companies get them selves properly aligned then it will be legalized on the federal level. There are both good and bad sides to that.
Meanwhile, it's still illegal so companies and physicians have liability. We have progressively become more litigious, blame has to be laid somewhere for everything in our society. Only getting worse.
As far as the clains that smoking pot isn't as bad as smoking cigarettes, well, that simply isn't true. Pot produces about 10x more tar than cigarettes. Smoking pot is the quickest way to get the effects, however, it's nearly impossible to regulate dosage by inhaling marijuana smoke. There are other, better ways to partake while controlling dosage. -

Reading all the responses makes me chuckle a bit. Personally I have nothing against anyone who partakes in it, to each his own. Just like I have nothing against anyone who smokes cigarettes/cigars, drinks. Only one of those 3, will not cause a loss in motor skills/behavior when done in excess. MJ and booze....yeah please get behind the wheel of a car or school bus/airplane/train...etc and tell me there's no ill effects.
Go to Amsterdam if you want to legalize everything. You can order all your drugs off a menu like your at McDonalds. You'll see most don't do much though and depend on government for their survival. Just what we need here, more dependents on government.
While pot has some medical reasons for it's use, we all know it's B.S. to get it legalized for the non medical users. As for the moral high ground.....I remember a time when tobacco users where looked down on, and still are. The same people now want to legalize pot which is just as harmful if not worse than cigarettes ??
We all have our vises, but of the main 3, pot/booze/tobacco, only one doesn't alter your behavior and motor skills. That's why we need more laws for the other 2.HT SYSTEM-

I don't subscribe to the theory that weed somehow became medicinal but I do believe the states see extra tax dollars there and that's what makes it ok now.
FWIW I wouldn't want a doctor firing up a crooked cigarette before I go under the knife whether it's deemed medicinal or not. -
Recent data showing deaths from opiates as a national epidemic has now caused tightening of narcotic prescriptions.
I don’t prescribe more than a few days worth from the Emergency Room and I prescribe zero if they have an established pain doctor contract.

My 85 year Mom had been on a synthetic opioid (tramadol) for 15 years due to degenerative back issues. She functioned perfectly, was healthy and happy, and never had an overdose issue while on the meds.
A few months ago due to the opioid crisis her doctor told her that the government is making him take her off them. She has been miserable ever since suffering from pain that never goes away and has left her nearly immobile.
We recently took her to a pain specialist and after jumping through a number of hoops including a drug tests, trying non-opioids, and therapy got her back on the original tramadol meds, but at a dose so low they don't help her. Interestingly, one of the next options the pain specialist discussed was medical cannabis.
I understand the concerns over opioid addictions, but the tightening has made it really hard for responsible people who really need them to function. -
It always fascinates me how passionate weed smokers can be about their weed. Imagine if a lot of them were that passionate about other aspects of their life. Can't tell you how often I still see them complain about how it should be legal and how it supposedly cures any number of diseases and so forth. I see someone get pinched for weed possession and then they complain how it should be legal. Guess what, you have to go on it's current legal status, not what you think it should be. If I were on the highway with a 55mph limit, then get a ticket for doing 70mph, I can't go into a court room with a defense of..."but but but, 55 is too slow, it should be 70." You have to go on what it is currently.
I could care less about weed (and to a large degree...alcohol). It's been 16+ years since the last puff I had with some friends on vacation. Before that, probably high school in 1985. I "medicate" myself in the gym with the weights and a good diet.
NOW, do I think it should be legal across the board...sure. Regulate and tax the heck out of it like alcohol. Just because it's legal, doesn't make me want to indulge any more. I don't need it because I had a bad day. If you find yourself needing it because a bad day, then one bad day at work turns into everyday is a bad day at work, then all 7 days seem to be bad days...then you have problems in your life and no amount of weed will fix it. Fix the problem, don't mask it.
With regards to medical weed, I watched my Mom get eaten away from Cancer back in 1995. She was not going to be cured and it was just a matter of time before she had succumbed to it. If smoking weed would have improved her quality of life up to the end, then absolutely I wish it were different back then. For those going through horrific situations like this, give them some relief. No excuses! -

John, I think you're actually referring to "K2" and other forms of "synthetic cannabinoids": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_cannabinoids
I think I smoked a bit of K2 and my lungs froze up for a couple hours. Scariest couple hours in the past 40 years for my breathing concerns.
I didn't know it was K2 but I had just heard about elderly men dying in parks around the country from that s**t and put 2 and 2 together. My young friend who brought it over is a BIG guy and he had no ill effects from it at all. He said it wasn't giving him as high a high as regular herb. He didn't know it was K2 but we think it was. I have sensitive lungs and it runs in my family on my father's side.
I think that K2 s**t was taken off the market after about 6 months. Am I right? Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them. -

There are clearly two kinds of plants. One that produces hemp and the one that produces THC. Saying they are one in the same is not true. Virtually all the benefits, both medically and industrially, are derived from the species that is used to produce hemp. The other just gets you stoned. CBD is the alkaloid that has medically proven pain relieving properties and is most prevalent in the hemp producing plant.Gustard X26 Pro DAC

Hemp also has THC just very very little. It does however have enough of it to cause a positive in drug testing if smoked.
But yes you're correct two different plants.
Both plants have CBD's even without the high the plant with THC also has other compounds that could be beneficial. The problem is the schedule 1 classification by the federal government mean there has been very little studies because the government will not allow for it. That was the main reason the doctors and scientific community wanted it switched to schedule 2 like cocaine. -
It’s a good opportunity to get rid of the strong pain killers, I was prescribed “10” opioids painkiller pills to make it through the days before and after sport bone fracture surgery... I was advised to not used if pain was bearable with over counter pills.

Well, marijuana is NOTHING like Cocaine, acid, LSD (if you can even find that anymore) Ti-sticks, Juji flies, meth and the like. Taking a puff of marijuana for most people is just a different type of high from alcohol.....yet, people don't die from marijuana.
Case in point, one who smokes the most potent Mary Jane out of the best pressure bong will not see two telephone poles walking across the street.

Tom, you need a new plug. -
I went to a acupuncturist for about a year for my neck issues. About once a month. Some visits were VERY productive while others weren't. BUT the days those pins relaxed my neck tension were AMAZINGLY beneficial!
By the way, I got a full body acupunture and massage session each time. About 1 1/2 hrs. to 2.Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them. -

I agree wholeheartedly! We're a nation of drug addicts and the Doctors are the pushers.
I had an issue with my left ankle for several months and wound up going to a Podiatrist. He took the customary X-Rays and did a complete exam and found nothing out of place, yet the tendon on the outside of the ankle was swollen. He shot me up with Cortisone directly into the area (not fun). It lasted for about a month, then right back to where I was with the pain. Fast forward...I mention this to my Chiropractor and he delves in deeper with more questions. Long story short...he starts having me do this low back exercise which resembles a pushup, but keeping my low body from the waist down relaxed. It hyperextends the low back. Low and behold a week later, my ankle starts coming around. I continue this exercise a few times daily and the ankle gets better and better. Turns out...Sciatica that was generating in the low back and ran down my leg into the ankle. The Cortisone shot simply masked the pain, then wore off.
So yeah, alternate pain management, alternate medicine and such along with dietary and lifestyle (think exercise) changes all needs to be pushed even harder.
No excuses! -
