Finally retiring my RTi10's (2.0 setup) - now what?

I've had my trusty RTi10's for almost 10 years now, and I've ran them hard and loud for most of that. They're starting to sound tired though, and my wife hates looking at them (I lost the grills years ago), so I'm going to either sell them if there is any interest or relegate them to garage duty.
Now for a question - my RTi10's packed enough punch and range to keep me happy in my younger years in 2.0, but I'm considering moving to a smaller footprint than towers can give me.
In your opinion, what setup would get me close to the RTi10 in 2.0? I was thinking two bookcase speakers initially, but then I realized I would need a separate subwoofer now. Then I started thinking that I would probably want a center channel as well, with the bookcase speakers being much smaller than my towers.
So... Am I looking at a 3.1 setup? My wife got a Vizio "5.1" (soundbar + 2 surround and a wireless sub) for us to try, but I'm not expecting much out of it and I'd really hate to let my receiver go to waste.
I'd love to know your opinions!

You and your wife should take a look at Polk's Signature Series. They are beautiful speakers and put out great sound.
I've never been one for bookshelf speakers, don't forget you will also have to buy stands for them in which case, you might as well get a pair of towers.
Even with the S60's I think you will need a sub, but they makes subs with small footprints now so hopefully that won't be a problem.
Here is the review with pics I did on my S60's I couldn't be happier with them in my system.
Keep us posted on what you get.
