These will be in a small room using old SX-750. Question is..is one speaker better than the other or about the same. If the same I can save a few dollars with the Polks

Are you sure you want to use an SX-750?

I've heard neither, but I would still be going with the Polks based on past experience.

... and, heck, I mean... this is the Polk forum, you know?

Why not use the SX-750? I know both those Polks and JBL are the lower end of the thier lines but for my needs and the size of the room I see no need to invest in high end speakers. The sx-750 needs to be used for something.

Just never cared much for that era of Pioneer receivers sonically (although they're undeniably nice looking and pretty well designed and built). Pretty bland and grainy/solid state-y sounding (IMO, that is, of course)

Also -- not sure how happy one would be driving a modern loudspeaker load (which are typically more challenging to drive for 1970s era hardware due to interesting impedance curves coupled with relatively low sensitivity).

It was free with a little cleaning up it sounds fine, in fact it will just blow away my Pioneer VSX-1131 (I know not great but newer than sx-750) Not saying the pioneer is all that but some of these old vintage receivers/amps are really really good

A bit more work, but if you scour Craigslist, you can find speakers that are a good bit better than either of the two you asked about, for maybe even less money.

There are many great deals in used speakers, even relatively new ones. Just make sure you listen to them first.

One set we got for next to nothing and was impressive were the Athena AS-B1.1

They are everywhere, and sound quite good for a Best buy speaker from about 15 years ago.

5.5" woofer, they have decent bass, really good clarity and imaging.
Honestly think they were better than any polk or Jbl of a similar size.
