New HT Considerations

Hey Guys,
I'm attending a Basement Remodeling class this week - 2 4-hour classes. The class is designed to arm the attendee with info in case they want to tackle such a project, or at least be more aware of what should be considered if you're working with a contractor.
Anyway, to make a long story short, I mentioned to the instructor my plans to build a HT room, and asked if he knew of the best way to soundproof the room. He said to consider installing soundboard on the framing, then drywall over it. My question is...have any of you guys out there done this? Does it deadon the sound enough to warrant the extra cost? If so, any idea of what the additional cost would be?
Also, do any of you bass heads out there have suspended ceiling tiles in your HT room. If so, does your deep bass rattle the ceiling frame/tiles? Or is it best to just have a drywall ceiling with recessed lighting?
Thanks in advance.

couldn't comment on the soundproofing of the walls , thats my neighbors problem , as for the suspended cieling i have never heard a rattle from it , ever. but we did use metal track(not plastic) and we put a small bead of silicone on all the intersecting joints(do not do this until the cieling is fully assembled and all the tiles are lined up properly) good luck with you project.
p.s. unless you really like your nieghbors and don't want to disturb them , i wouldn't invest in sound proofing the room. mine on one side are deaf and the other are **** , when they piss me off i just put on u571 and let the depth charges do the rest. -
What I did was hang a 5/8" layer of drywall and then overlayed that with 1/2". Hang one layer vertically and the other horizontally.
The double layer of drywall works excellent for sound control and for eliminating boomy bass due to wall vibrations. Stuff the walls with a good insualtion and you'll be fine.
If you can, go with a drywall ceiling. You'll get better sound control with that over those lightweight ceiling panels and you'll have no worries with vibrations and, it'll be much less expensive.If...

Another thing you could do is put up a layer of homasote under the drywall. It's a little more than drywall, but works very well. Avoid drop ceilings if you can, go with drywall, unless you have alot of stuff you might need to get to.

Oakland Builders Institute offers the course in my neck of the woods in Oakland County, MI
Two-day class (4 hours each day). Cost: $100 plus $8 for a decent paperback book on basement remodeling. Not a step-by-step what to do book, but a nice reference for what one might be in for should he/she decide to do it themselves.Mains: polkaudio RTi70's (bi-wired)

I have a suspended ceiling, and have never heard a rattle from it. Though I have rattled the upstairs freestanding wood stove.:D Have funThere are two ways to argue with women. Both of them are wrong.
