I have a few of those. No concerns with them with how I use them. I have two in use only for archiving files in case one goes bad. Never have had a problem with a Western Digital product in the last couple decades though. I have one hooked up via USB to an Oppo 205 for ripped DVD and Blu-Ray content. Another provides extra storage through USB to a music streamer. Everything fails at some point, but those portable drives work long term for the uses I have for them.

Of course, an internal drive offers better performance. Western Digital Black drives are good for media.

I suggest you go for a NAS (cloud one) this will give you more flexibility and allow you to upload photos and other doc's from your phone no matter where you are.

I've seen the small portables fail more often. I suspect it's probably more from getting tossed around before spinning down, and getting beat up in general.

I like the MyBook series. And get a backup with capacity that will cover both your computer *and* the first external. Never have your data in only one location. Don't rely on cds, dvds, or thumb drives for backup.

All depends on how much your willing to spend.

A QNAP 4 bay NAS with 4 drives in raid 5 is about as full prof you can get. It would cost over a grand. Having it on you network is nice. Great part is I can access my drive anyplace I have a connection and remote into it.

WD MY CLOUD works very good, not full prof like the QNAP but serves well on the network too. Cost about $200

The smaller portable drives are ok, just don't put any faith in them lasting forever.

When I was a kid my parents told me to turn it down. Now I'm an adult and my kids tell me to turn it down.

Ended up finding an extra external hard drive in the closet. This is mainly for pictures/videos of my kids, so once I copy to the drive the drive will be put in a safe place. I'll never have a need to access them from anywhere except my computer.

That being said, you guys have me thinking about a NAS or at the very least a MY CLOUD in the future. Thanks for the input.

Agree and not brand selective but I've had great luck with Synology and don't miss a thing about the external hard drive units. NAS is the way to go.
