That was my thought as well at the beginning of drones becoming readily available. It's only a matter of time before someone uses one for evil purposes and I'm surprised it hasn't happened yet

Bingo, but I believe it has happened already, in the middle east. That is putting the cart before the horse imho, just wait until those Amazon drones start falling from the skies, landing on cars, causing traffic accidents/deaths. Then you'll see a host of regulations come down, and you'll have to start registering drones like a gun and have to get certified to fly one.

Some cities have driverless cars delivering pizzas. That car kills someone, who goes to jail ? Some cities across the pond have applied for licenses to fly drones as a taxi service in the air. What can possibly go wrong eh ?

Technology, just like a gun, knife, hammer, is a tool, can be used for good or bad things by the person controlling that tool. Technology offers far more ways to do evil things though and the lack of controls/limits/laws surrounding it make it a prime target to be used.

Reminds me of the old saying....just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD.

Drones....started out as basically a toy. Good people saw the tech as a means to expand their business, such as real estate and land surveying. Others, sought to use that tech in more unscrupulous ways. Like spying, weaponizing them.

Does that mean we should ban all drones ? Because of it's potential to do harm to others ? Now apply that thought to other areas and you can see how silly that argument sounds.

Currently the FAA rules state that all drones with a weight of 0.5-55 pounds ( anything above 55 pounds is in another category) and above must be registered. At this time only those that use a drone for commercial purposes (when paid or furtherance of a business) are required to obtain a license. Future rules that may be coming are, All drone operators will be required to pass a FAA test.

So let me ask. Is it legal to fly them onto my property and video record without my permission of my property and buildings?

Not to my knowledge. You cant over fly anyone's private property. At least around here. There fun to hunt...like hunting ducks, just wait for one to fly by and boom, boom.

You don't own the airspace above your property, The FAA has jurisdiction of Airspace in the US, not the property owner. Some drones do even need to be over your property to video tape you, Some come with lenses that can zoom in from a quarter mile away or better.

Do you shoot at helicaptors or aircarft that fly over your property? Drones by definition are considered aircraft.

Yes and no, here is a better description. Basically, you own the airspace that can be directly correlated to the land. For instance, if you have a one story house, and you want to build a 5 story house, you own that airspace to do so, providing local ordinances obviously approve of such a thing. Same reason one can put up a 50 story skyscraper.

Generally speaking, residential lots.....might be recognized as 500 feet above. So while the government controls the airspace technically, you still can't fly hordes of drones 20 feet over someones house. That would be/could be, considered an invasion of privacy.

^^^ Very simple definition. "..within stated elevations..."

I met an appraiser from Miami a few years ago. He said 90% of his work involved
appraising air rights in downtown Miami. Buildings being built over others etc.

Well, my giant slingshot development was coming along quit nicely until somebody called Child Protective Services.
Right when me and the grandkids were at the point of accumulating all the necessary kinetic data !
....I think it was either my daughter or DIL.
Once again, thwarted by those afraid of science !
