I was attempting to add the next category when I accidentally hit the enter button, and of course this wonderful forum software wouldn't let me edit the poll choices.

You're cartridge is worth more than that. :p

I think all of my equipment that I own (multiple amps/receivers, 30+ pair of speakers, and all the AV equipment) might just barely put me in the 3rd category. I think I've been rather fortunate in that regard. 90% happened starting 3-6 months before I joined this forum till now.

You guys (and gals) are awful ;)

I think I calculated all the stereo stuff I had years ago amounted to 75K+ easy ( msrp or retail when new ). All of it purchased for pennies on the dollar. ;)
Then I sold a lot of it off for income for a couple years.

I now have a lot of books and stuff taking up that old stereo component / speakers space.

I am right there with you. Fortunately, wheeling, dealing and buying used has kept the out of pocket costs to less than 15k...

It's really hard to say for mine given the b-a$-tard collection of vintage, found, new, DIY and kit components therein. Replacement cost would be pretty substantial, though. E.g., I have about $2k in my loudspeakers, but to replace them "exactly" would probably set me back $10k at current street prices for the stuff that's in them (and having another pair of cabinets built).

So what's the goal here, to spend the least amount of money possible and build a nice system? I win. I'm extremely cheap! Like really cheap.

I wonder how much $$ I've spent going to all these yard sales, Pawn shops and Goodwill stores over the years?

    500.00 maybe?

    Well worth it!

Anywho, I was looking for system cost, at retail, minus cabling/accessories to get at a "core" component cost demographic for the forum. Not HT stuff, but dedicated music system components.

Mine: $8850.00 (amp, pre, source, speakers, power center)

    Yes indeed.

I don't really hear anything about cost, maybe a couple times regarding cables.

I agree it's a hobby, and for the most part, my friends either have cars or a couple have a boat...still a hobby.

My buddy has a sweet Audi S6, it's his baby and does sub 4 second 0-60 all day long stock. That car is basically his hobby, and one hobby of mine is my audio gear. I can see how some people may question high dollar audio gear, but generally the ones who don't see it as a hobby.

Whether 50K on a car, or 10K, 20K...or 150K on stereo gear...its someone's personal choice and their hobby or love for their enjoyment.

Nice thing about audio gear, I get to enjoy it every day, cost less to own than a car or boat, and retains more of its value. Not saying cars and boats aren't fun.. B)
